Era: New Era

Wal-ta-ka is a desert world with no free-standing water. The system has a population between 10,000 and 10 million, lacking the industrial base to be completely self-supporting. It is a member of Wilds in the Atsah Subsector of Deneb Sector.

  • This world was once known as Walter.

Description (Astrography & Planetology)

Wal-ta-ka is a terminus of the Atsah Cluster.

Wal-ta-ka has a single moon, Legat-la. Its slow orbit and large size cause eclipses of several hours duration in some places. Legat-la also causes a minor libration effect on the planet; the sun, Ember, appears to slowly oscillate in a small figure-eight pattern.

Mainworld Conditions

Wal-ta-ka is tidally locked. Its high density clearly indicates a high metal content. Unfortunately, surface deposits turned out to be smaller than expected and hazardous to work.

  • Starport: Estin Down.

Native Lifeforms

Life clusters at the rare oases.

  • Grasses and fruit-bearing plants are found here, many of them useful or edible to the Human locals.
  • Sand crabs: Found in and near any body of open water. They are edible and considered a delicacy.
  • Sand swimmer: The most dangerous native inhabitant of Wal-ta-ka. It hunts alone, moving through sand slightly below the surface, seeking the pressure of an animal was standing on the sand above. It can surface and strike very rapidly.

History & Background (Dossier)

This is a Non-Aligned world, despite being within territory of the Third Imperium. It is in proximity to the client states of the Atsah Cultural Region.

The Human people known as San-de Wai-to-ka (Children of Wal-ta-ka) live at tech level 2, performing all work by hand or by animal power. They have no permanent buildings or machinery, believing that technology makes men weak and dependent, and in large doses causes insanity.

World Starport (St)

Wal-ta-ka has a Class C Starport, an average quality installation which includes amenities including unrefined fuel for starships, some brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing maintenance and other kinds of repair. Ports of this classification generally have only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

World Population (P)

Wal-ta-ka has a population of 60,000 sophonts (tens of thousands).

  • This is a Nonindustrial World, too small to support the complete chain of production of most goods from start to finish.

Linguistic Topography

  • The native language is a highly derived and corrupted form of Anglic.
  • The planet's native name is certainly from the Anglic, but the exact origin is debated. Some claim that it is a corruption of “Wellington”, as Wellington Interstellar Miners was the corporation for whom the stranded miner populations that formed the original society worked. Others argue that it is from "Wall (of) the Catastrophe", with the narrow habitable twilight band on which the locals live being the "wall" shielding them from the climate extremes of either hemisphere.
  • Anglic heritage on Wal-ta-ka is obvious in names and titles:
    • Torbal Ta-Ged (Torbal the Good)
    • Tabor San-Seyidd (Tabor, son of Seyidd)
    • Rila Maras-Laku (Rila, wife of -- i.e. “marriage” – Laku)

World Technology Level (T)

Wal-ta-ka possesses a Technology Level of TL–9.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Fiber optics and satellite communication and data networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fusion power.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Ultra high-speed trains and early grav vehicles.
    • Water: High efficiency sailcraft, multihulled seacraft, improved artificial gills.
    • Air: Tiltrotorcraft, exotic VTOL's, PARWIG, and rocket-assisted suborbitals.
    • Space: SSTO spacecraft, early military spacecraft (System Craft), and interstellar STL starships
    • FTL: Prototype Jump Drive-1.
  • The local San-de Wai-to-ka people live at TL-2.

World Government (G)

Wal-ta-ka is governed by Self-Perpetuating Oligarchy. A single family or small group provides the leadership and important positions in the government. These positions are inherited by member of the group or their family members. The organization may be monarchy, with titles passed to family members. Or a plutocracy where inheritance of the family fortune includes government position. Or the organization may be more typical organization with positions of power inherited.

World Military

No information yet available.

World Law (L)

Wal-ta-ka has a low law level. There are few laws, covering only important areas. There may be few or no law enforcement officers, the expectation is citizens will bring law breakers to the attention of the Judicial system. Legal proceedings will be fast, with few people involved. For interactions outside of the framework of the laws, cultural norms dominate. Body pistols, explosives, and poison gas are typically regulated or prohibited.

World Culture

The individual San-de Wai-to-ka tribes, each numbering twenty to fifty persons, are independent of each other. They meet only occasionally for recreation, competitions, and the arranging of marriages to ensure genetic diversity.

At 14, a girl moves from her parent's tent into one of her own, preparing for womanhood. Her father (or mother, if, her father is dead) must agree to any proposed marriage match and be paid a bride-price. Fertility is valued highly.

Historical Data

Wellington Instersteller Miners.jpg

Wal-ta-ka was originally settled by Wellington Interstellar Miners early in the Third Imperium period.

  • A disaster in 234 forced miners from their protective domes and onto the bright side of the planet.
  • Visiting traders found the colony destroyed and all miners were presumed dead.
  • In 364 an expedition to resettle Wal-ta-ka found descendants of the miners who had survived the destruction of the colony.
  • These descendants had developed a full-fledged subculture with unique customs and a new language derived from Anglic.

There once were men who lived beyond the wall of darkness, evil men who hated mighty Wal-ta-ka and in their arrogance plotted to suck the very life from his inner depths.

Wal-ta-ka's wrath was kindled against these men. In his great fury, Wal-ta-ka drove the men from their contrivances; away from an existence of weakness and insanity, to a true understanding of Wal-ta-ka and his ways.
