A signal flare is specifically a launched device.

  • A signal flare is a standard type which provides an easily noticed trail of light (but no real illumination).
  • An illuminating flare last for approximately 30 seconds and lights up everything in a radius of 50 meters around its location.

Such flares are always noticed at night but have little effect by day.
