Petre is a pre-agricultural and nonindustrial world lacking adequate development for its economy to become prosperous.

  • As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
  • It is a member of the Third Imperium in the Vestus Subsector of Reft Sector in the Domain of Deneb.

Description (Planetology)

Most of the mainworld is dry wilderness, with the population concentrated around a few urban areas established near water sources.

Mainworld Topography and Geography

Although the world has roughly 60% coverage of surface water, this is fairly shallow as oceans go. The oceans tend to lie in the bottom of deep bowls, with a surrounding coastal plain. Inland from this the land rises rapidly, in many cases in spectacular sheer cliffs hundreds of metres high. It has been suggested that Petre once had far more water, and that the coastal plains are what was once the continental shelf. Various theories have been put forward concerning the missing volume of water.

History & Background (Dossier)

Petre is an Imperial world located in the Berg Cluster in Vestus Subsector of Reft Sector.

  • Petre hosts a major small craft racing event every decade.
  • Over the last century this event has attracted fans from as far away as Deneb Sector.

Urbanization

The population, numbering about 80,000, dwell in widely separated communities centred on watercourses or underground artesian basins from which water can be obtained by drilling. These settlements tend to be fairly large, concentrating the population into several dense areas with untamed wilderness between them. This permits artificial irrigation of farmland or indoor gardening to feed the population.

Government

Each community is self-governing, usually along the lines of a representative democracy or a colonial-style bureaucratic system with appointed officers running government functions.
