This article relates to civil Police Officers employed by a Police Force.

Description (Specifications)

A Police Officer is an Agent of a government (or government department) charged with the investigation of alleged breaches of Civil Law.

Police Officers are employed by Police Forces.

A Police Officer will be empowered by, and to enforce, a specific code of Law defined by the Jurisdiction of the Police Force of which they are a member. This may be a local jurisdiction or may carry an Imperium wide one e.g. Imperial Sanction.

Police in the Imperium

Police Officers within the Imperium tend to follow one of two paths

  1. Those providing the day-to-day visible face of the force, providing Law and Order and
  2. Those undertaking behind the scenes investigation of alleged crimes.

Visible Vs Under-cover policing

Not all police work is undertaken by people in uniform or acting openly. The various police forces may insinuate members of their organisation into the Criminal underworld as undercover agents.

Where the purpose of those agents is the gathering of commercial, military, naval or political Intelligence, the role is outside that of Police Officer. See Intelligence Agent a.k.a. Spy.

Other forms of policing

Customs Officials at the starport exits (and elsewhere on planet) are a form of Police Officer.

Not all police work is undertaken by Government agents. For non-Governmental investigators see Private Investigator and Bounty Hunter.

police Work

Much police work involves the gathering of information from networks of Informants and pre-empting prospective law-breaking.
