Lii-rats are a genetically engineered version of the rat, a creature native to Terra (Solomani Rim 1827), and the unintended results of a failed experiment to breed artificial game animals for sophontic hunters.

Lii-rat (Creature) Physiology & Ecology

Lii-rats were once part of a program to create an artificial ecosystem of life on Liikirba (Dagudashaag 1705). When explorers from the First Imperium first discovered the world, or more accurately moon of Liikirba, it was a low-population garden world located in the Arnakhish Subsector of Dagudashaag. As mentioned, Liikirba is a moon in orbit around the gas giant, Mhir.

Scientists from the First Imperium found the biosphere of Liikirba to be in a very early stage of development with almost no advanced lifeforms, and an extensive ecosystem of simpler lifeforms. In other words, it was an ideal testing ground for creating new life and ecosystems. The "Liikirban Biopshere Project" was one of the most ambitious biological projects ever ventured, but it was cut short when the Long Night hit, and abandoned. This left room for the experimental lifeforms to run wild, which was the perfect opportunity for what was once, the meek Lii-rat. The modified rats continued their forced evolution on the alien world. The final results were a large, aggressive carnivore, working in packs to bring down almost any prey.

When a Makhidkarun colony was re-established in -233, it was discovered that some escaped laboratory rats from the initial geneering program had evolved at a tremendous rate and carved them a niche at the top of the planetary food chain. Lii-rats are the size of Tkighir's and teeth adjusted for killing and shearing instead of gnawing. Their size, up to 4.0 meters from nose to tail, ferocity, pack instinct, and feral intelligence make them extremely dangerous predators.

Lii-rat (Creature) History & Background (Dossier)

Before the Long Night hit, Liikirban interests were bought out by the Makhidkarun Megacorporation and the planet was set up as a hunting reserve during the First Imperium for use by Makhidkarun executives. Extensive gene engineering of both local and imported livestock was apparently carried out prior to the Long Night to create the perfect (and safe) hunter's paradise. The Long Night meant abandoning the planet.

The rats were used as part of the experimental stock on Liikirba (Dagudashaag 1705) as part of their larger geneering program. This program was started during the First Imperium as part of Makhidkarun hunter paradise program. The Long Night forced Liikirba to be abandoned, with the various experiments escaping into the larger environment.

When the colony on Liikirba was re-established in -233, the Lii-rats proved to be interesting hindrance. These days, Makhidkarun has re-established Liikirba as a game planet, and safari staff escort rich tourists from Vland and Core again on their hunt for Lii-rat pelts. Makhidkarun has also allowed the "Liikirban Biopshere Project" to be continued, which now works hand in hand, with safari game planet interests.
