Galrann is an industrial, high-population fluidic world with a billion or more sophonts.

  • A fluid world has an oceanic geography consisting of heavily contaminated water or a substance such as ammonia, methane, hydrocarbons, or other exotic liquid.
  • As an industrial world, this planet has well-developed manufacturing and processing industries. Manufactured goods are a major export item.
  • This world has an exploration base, which is similar to an Imperial Scout base, capable of handling explorer personnel and exploratory starships.

Mainworld Data

Galrann has a Poor Starport without shipyards, can perform Major repairs, and provides Unrefined fuel. The main world is roughly 11,500 kilometers in diameter, and is a Medium terrestrial (e.g. Venus) with gravity of 0.9G. A year is 480 days. The atmosphere is similar to a corrosive atmosphere, but extreme conditions cause the corrosive effects to defeat any protective measures in 2 to 12 hours. The atmosphere has no oxygen content. The surface is roughly 95–100 percent surface liquid ammonia, which qualifies it as a wet world. The main world has a general population of 2 Billion local residents, which qualifies it as a High population world. The local government is characterized as Charismatic Dictator, with government by a single leader enjoying the confidence of the citizens. Visitors may find the law highly restrictive as weapons outside the home are regulated or restricted by local authorities.

Native Lifeforms

Galrann has a sentient native species known as the Galranni, an aquatic sophont species adapted to the planet’s fluidic ammonia-based environment. The Galranni are known for their bioluminescent communication, using pulses of light to convey complex ideas and emotions. Their physiology includes ammonia-resistant exoskeletal plating, allowing them to withstand the planet’s insidious atmosphere, which would corrode most conventional protective measures within hours.

Galranni Physical Description

  • Body Structure: The Galranni are elongated, eel-like sophonts, with flexible, muscular bodies that allow them to navigate the dense, corrosive liquid of their homeworld. Their movement is smooth and undulating, resembling deep-sea creatures on Earth.
  • Exoskeletal Plating: Instead of traditional scales or skin, they possess ammonia-resistant exoskeletal plating, which protects them from the planet’s corrosive atmosphere. This plating is segmented, allowing for flexibility while maintaining durability.
  • Bioluminescence: The Galranni communicate through bioluminescent pulses, emitted from specialized patches along their bodies. These pulses vary in intensity and color, forming a complex visual language that conveys emotions, concepts, and even structured dialogue.
  • Sensory Adaptations:
    • Multi-layered eyes: Their large, compound eyes are adapted to the murky depths of Galrann’s ammonia seas, capable of detecting subtle shifts in light and movement.
    • Electroreception: Galranni can sense electrical fields, allowing them to detect objects and creatures even in low-visibility environments.
  • Limb Structure: While primarily aquatic, the Galranni have four dexterous, multi-jointed appendages near their midsection, used for manipulating tools and interacting with their industrial environment. These limbs end in three-clawed digits, capable of fine motor control.
  • Respiration: They process ammonia-rich fluids through internal gill structures, extracting necessary gases while filtering out harmful compounds. Their metabolism is highly specialized, making them unable to survive in oxygen-rich environments without extensive life support.
  • Vocalization: While their primary communication is bioluminescent, they can produce low-frequency vibrations that travel through liquid, used for long-distance signaling or ritualistic purposes.

Culturally, the Galranni have a hierarchical society aligned with the planet’s charismatic dictatorship government. They are deeply integrated into Galrann’s industrial economy, contributing to manufacturing and processing industries, through bioengineered labor and specialized ammonia-based technologies.

History & Background (Dossier)

  • -1938
    • Ships from Exploratory Mission Number 315 arrived and charted Galrann. They detected life, but with the corrosive atmosphere were unable to significantly determine any significant details.

World starport

Galrann has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.

The highport has oxygen-rich sections for off-worlders and ammonia-filled zones for Galranni, separated by airtight bulkheads and environmental transition chambers.
There is also a cross-species meeting area using sealed negotiation rooms with atmospheric balancing systems, allowing both parties to interact safely.
Galranni ships dock at ammonia-compatible bays, while oxygen-based vessels use standard docking ports with airlocks.
Cargo transfer systems would include sealed transport pods, ensuring goods move between atmospheres without contamination.

World technology level

Galrann possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
    • Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
    • Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
    • Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

World government

Galrann is governed by a Charismatic Dictatorship. Charismatic governments justify their ability to rule by simply asserting their right to rule. Charismatic dictatorships are typically young governments, coming as a recent change, and rely on the leader(s) to supply head of government.

Leader as of 1115 is High Luminary Vessh’korr.

World Law Level

Galrann has a high law level with laws covering many areas of interactions of people, corporations, and the government. A few worlds with this law level may be Amber Zones. Any interaction with the judicial system requires an Advocate trained in the local legal system. Law enforcement is present almost everywhere, either as people or via technology. Legal proceedings can take weeks to months to resolve and involve a dozen or more people. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (outside private residences or visiting starships).

World Economy

Galranni Industries

  • Ammonia-Based Manufacturing – Their industrial sector focuses on chemical processing, using ammonia-rich compounds to create specialized materials resistant to extreme environments.
  • Bioluminescent Technology – Given their natural bioluminescent communication, they have developed light-based data transmission or biological lighting systems for infrastructure.
  • Deep-Sea Mining & Resource Extraction – Their planet’s dense liquid environment supports subsurface mining operations, extracting rare minerals dissolved in ammonia oceans.
  • Bioengineered Construction – Structures are often grown rather than built, using symbiotic organisms that reinforce habitats against corrosion.
  • Electroreceptive Navigation & Communication – Their ability to sense electrical fields leads to advanced sonar-like mapping systems for planetary exploration.

Trade Data

The Galranni’s expertise in ammonia-based engineering makes them valuable trade partners for species needing corrosion-resistant technology or fluidic propulsion systems.
They are cautious about off-world influence, ensuring trade agreements benefit Galrann without compromising sovereignty.
