A Signal Flare is a launched signalling device.

  • The handheld version is referred to simply as a Flare.

Description (Specifications)

A signal flare is a low velocity projectile packed with chemicals that burn very brightly, usually to attract attention in an emergency.

  • Different colors, generated by different chemical components, may denote different meanings.

A signal flare is fired using a Flare Gun.

Before it is fired, a signal flare is generally referred to as a cartridge or round.

History & Background (Dossier)

Signal flare rounds have two main variants:

  • A signal flare is a standard type which provides an easily noticed trail of light but no real illumination.
    • Signal flares are generally subdivided by color.
    • Some signal flares may have an audible component (typically a whistle or a loud bang).
  • An illuminating flare lasts for approximately 30 seconds and lights up everything in a radius of 50 meters around its location.
    • An illuminating flare may include a parachute to prolong its duration and effect.

Signal and illumination flares are always noticed in darkness but have little effect in bright conditions.
