Basic
The various parts of the kidneys, including elements such as the casing, microelectronics, and arterial and urethral connections are made with biocompatible materials. These may include metal alloys, carbon nanotubes, silicon gels, and layered polymers.

Similar devices have been in use since the days of the First Imperium. They reached their modern form through Terran medical advances achieved during the Interstellar Wars period.

Upgrades
Both organic and cybernetic kidneys may be upgraded:

* Supercharger: a device used to store endorphins that the character's body naturally produces. The endorphins are saved for reintroduction into the body when needed, adding extra oxygen to (and removing fatigue-causing toxins from) the bloodstream: it improves the endurance of the individual. The supercharger is either installed in a space made available by removal of half of an organic kidney, or may be built into a cybernetic kidney. No more than one supercharger may be installed.

* Hypercharger: A larger and more advanced form of the supercharger, the hypercharger requires removal of an entire kidney or may be built into a cybernetic kidney. It provides superior benefits to a supercharger, greatly improving the endurance of the individual. No more than one hypercharger may be installed, and it may not be installed in addition to a supercharger.

Cybernetic Kidneys are battery-powered devices that filter blood. They serve to maintain overall fluid balance and help the body pass waste as urine. They are typically fitted as a pair and usually include a bladder. An artificial bladder has a capacity of around 0.5 liters and weighs around 0.5 kg when full.

Enhanced Kidneys serve to more aggressively filter toxins and pathogens from the blood. This increases resistance to blood borne diseases and toxins, inducing alcohol and most drugs. The bladder system can extract water from the urine reducing the need for water consumption. Combined with a Synthetic Liver renders the patient immune to almost every known toxin.
