The Geehrtahe are a Minor Race native to Pr'Geehr (Dagudashaag 1829).

Physiology and Ecology[edit]

The Geehrtahe are a race of tree-dwelling hunter-gatherers with two-metre long flattened bodies. Their skin is covered in fine hair. A thin membrane stretches between the central two thirds of the body, extended on modified ribs. The membrane when extended allows the individual Geehrtahe to make prolonged glides in the dense air and low gravity environment of their planet. The Geehrtahe only possess two limbs on the anterior portion of the body; each ends in four digits which have retractable claws, allowing them to make fine manipulations with their 'hands'. It also enables them to cling onto rough surfaces.

Lifecycle[edit]

The Geehrtahe live on average for 40 seasons (approximately 80 standard years). As they get older, Geehrtahe begin to discolour, becoming a dark yellow-brown as a haemoglobin-like molecule begins breaking down. Depositions of the waste product react with sunlight to give painful stimulation of nerves in the skin, thus sufferers tend to avoid strong sunlight and live in the darker, lower branches of the trees. As an individual gets older, the aging process can be marked by descent towards the forest floor.

In time, the pigments also make their way into the brain. Very old, unstable individuals often make one last sortie to the top of the highest tree they can find. The intense pain from the photo-reaction with the pigments in the skin and the general mental instability usually results in victims launching themselves to their death. The Geehrtahe call such people "Tah'Muanallh Geehrtahen" ('the mad yellow one'). The bodies of these individuals are revered; their bodies are collected from the forest floor and suspended from the highest branches for one local year prior to burial. For individuals who have died by other means, the bodies are suspended from branches that matched their status in life (the higher the status, the higher the branch) for only ten local days before burial.

Culture[edit]

Politically and financially, Geehrtahe are so competitive that it borders on the expansionistic, but force or violence is greatly condemned.

A female has several consorts, and each year she can have two litters of between two and four 'pups'. There is usually a separate father for each litter, the female selecting a mate on a 'rota' from her marriage group. The males do most of the work rearing the young with the female overseeing the labour. Males care for the pups of all cohorts equally.
