Subject: RE: Traveller Library Data

Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2006 10:37:48 +0200

Hello Steve

Sorry about the delay, but I had to consider this request for a while. Originally, I spent a lot of time compiling the library data, so I am a bit emotionally attached to it. On the other hand, I have abandonded Traveller a couple of years ago, and it's better that this material can live on than just sitting dead on my web site.

I've noticed that other Library Data entries on your wiki have a source which lists the original web site along with the canonical source. If you'll credit me or my site as the web source for the entries you use, you are free to go ahead.

Have fun.

Mark

Subject: Traveller Library Data
Mark,
I found this Wiki (http://traveller.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page ) and I would hope that you will allow the use of any data from your webuite that would normally be found in a ship's llibrary data to be transferred onto this Wiki.
Thank you for your support of Traveller,
Steve

Trivia might be worth mentioning

07-03-2006

In surfing the net I cam across this site [1] that looked like it might be interesting to include. Maybe add it to the external links referred to on the main page, but if we could tie it to the planetary listings.....

Challenge Magazine

06-28-2006

Is there a wealth of information in the Challenge magazines? The reason I am asking is because I am trying to gather more data for the library (as well as for eventual game use) and I tend to think that the $8.00 or so per issue (on EBay) seems a little steep. Any input?

I have a number of the Challenge magazines (many but not all). Their traveller content is variable. For example, Challenge 39 has a complete sector write up on the Hinterworlds sector. But other issues have little or none, or at least none that can be easily imported into the Wiki. So it is worth it to get some of the issues, even at $8 each. But not all of them. Tjoneslo 17:26, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
I have (all?) the Challenge magazines (perhaps I am missing one or two). I haven't looked at them for some time. $8.00 each? I guess it depends on how much you want a complete collection, I would pay $8 for any that I would be missing. Sometimes you can find good bargains at auctions at say GenCon or more regional cons. Category talk:Astrography

06-27-2006

Pondering adding stable planetary data to Wiki, see Category talk:Astrography for details. Personally I'd like to leave that discussion on that page, it would make it easier to track the thoughts of other members.

Editing issues

What specific issues were you having with the Maneuver Drive article? I fixed the { {LE} } tag.

Thanks

Adding MegaTraveller Library Data

06-26-2006

I just added information about all the GDW published books related to MegaTraveller. Far Future Enterprises had released a CDRom with all thier material in PDF format. Over the next few weeks I'll see what Library Data I can extract.

I know a lot of the Imperial Encylopedia has already been dumped into the Wiki, but it would be nice if we could link the source tags back to the book. I know, a lot of minor edits. Tjoneslo 14:49, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

Loads and loads of minor edits. For some of the latest additions I have tried to make sure I enter the author's name, as well as the source.

Have you figured out a way to mass-print portions of the data in here? I think it might be easier at times (especailly late at night) to go through the texts with a highlighter to make sure all the links are identified.

Only the hard way, one article at a time. The downside to a Wiki is each entry is on one page. With short entries we are dealing with, it may have been better to use the all entries on one page.
I've gotten used to the online editing (WiFi is your friend). I usually hit "Random page" and edit it, following some links. Or I go through the Most wanted pages, looking at the 2/3 links to find orphaned links. But it will take a while to disambugate and correcly source link the thousand+ articles. Tjoneslo 16:20, 26 June 2006 (UTC)

I suppose downloading the pages is jsut as painful then... DARN.

Go bug Dan, as Wiki administrator he may have some way of taking a system backup in an easier way than one page at a time. Tjoneslo 16:30, 26 June 2006 (UTC)
As I said elsewhere, the entire database is available as an XML file...Dcorrin 18:54, 4 July 2006 (UTC)

Initial Start Up

06-05-2006

I just recently found this Wiki; and am trying to add some of the data form my own files that I have pulled from various places on the internet. I have managed to reach one of the originators of one of the sites from which I gleaned a lot of information. Here is his response (as well as my orignal query):

I have no problem with you doing this. I have gotten away from Traveller in the past few years, as the group I played with split up their separate ways.

Jimmy Simpson

At 11:05 PM 6/5/2006, you wrote:

On your website with the library data you had mentioned: “Actually, I would love to see a Wiki version of Traveller Library Data that anyone in the Traveller community could add to and edit. Unfortunately, I know absolutely nothing about setting up a Wiki database or anything like that, so this will have to do.

Well, I happened across http://traveller.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page .

I have slowly started to transfer some of the data from your site to the Wiki, and before I get too deep into this I thought I probably should ask if you have any objections to this. Form the statement above I tend to think that you have no problem at all, but I thought I’d ask in any case.

You have done a wonderful job in setting this up and I hope you find this other library data site as much of a useful tool as I do.

Steve

I would be careful about simply dumping all of the Library.jtas.net entries here because Mr. Simpson is not the original author of most of this material. I've been borrowing material from http://gateway.pocketempires.com/ because Mr. Seemann was kind enough to tag all the entries with their original source material. I imagine most of this material is from Solomani & Aslan, and some of the later Traveller Digests. tjoneslo

Also putting Source: http://librarydata.jtas.net/ is not valid unless we know for certain that the owner of the site created the entry. The reason that we need to be clear about such things is that copywritten material cannot appear here without the author's (or copyright owners') permission. We have the latter for all officially published Traveller material. 216.9.243.103 13:13, 6 June 2006 (UTC)

Message area

I think that we all should be watching the Talk:Main Page and carrying on most of our site wide discussion there. Comments? Dcorrin 13:28, 5 July 2006 (UTC)

Ok, I'll start threads on the main page, ... but its so much fun to find a "nugget" everynow and then on a differnt page....

En Garde!

I have hosted the official En Garde page for some time (I don't know its status now). I see that you have/had some interest in the game, any interest in an en-garde wiki here? Dcorrin 19:34, 12 July 2006 (UTC)

I haven't played En Garde in 25-30 years. I don't even know if I have book anymore. If I do, chances are that it is in storage in California. I have found some websites (mostly European based) in the past couple of months however.
Starting a Wiki might be a good idea to revive interest in that game, but I am really limited in my current circumstance.

Welcome Home

I saw from your other discussion pages you were on your way home from Iraq. Welcome home. Tjoneslo 05:10, 26 July 2006 (UTC)

Well, I made it back in one piece. I am in the process of unpacking after a family move from Denver to Detroit; so it will be a while before I can join back in on a regular basis. Right now the primary focus is getting the house set to to resemble a home. Steve 22 Aug 06

Resizing pictures.

If you want to resize the pictures: http://www.shrinkpictures.com/ This is a site I use all the time. Very simple and very fast. Tjoneslo 19:20, 27 September 2006 (UTC)

Signal-GK

I had a request out to Leighton to see if we could post the cover images as part of the Wiki, which is why I hadn't done it yet. I'll finish filling in the deails. We may, if permission is withdrawn, need to remove these pictures. Tjoneslo 00:38, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Usually small images (I use 150px by y) of magazine or book covers for illustration are covered under fair use. Larger images, particularly as we are not displaying them in their full size, could be cut down. Dcorrin 17:47, 22 November 2006 (UTC)

Permissions for David Burden

Can you send a note to Mr. Burden to request his permission to post his material in the wiki. Once he consents (if he consents), create an author's page under his name David Burden, and post a note there to the effect "He has given permission to post his Traveller material to the wiki". And give it a category of Authors. Tjoneslo 23:56, 20 December 2006 (UTC)

I tried to send an email earlier today, but the address found on the site bounced.
That's the problem with the older material. The Authors have moved on. I have the entire CD of HIWG stuff but can't find the authors to post any of it. Ah, well. Tjoneslo 16:14, 22 December 2006 (UTC)
What are the chances of getting a copy of that CD? I tried to order one from one of the websites a while back (address was in San Diego, I think), but had no response.
I got mine from a former HIWG member who made a copy for me. I need to make sure my CD burner is in shape and I need a physical address to send it to. If I had both I could proably have it to you early next year. Tjoneslo 21:36, 22 December 2006 (UTC)
Send me an email on [deleted]. Then we can discuss the rest of the details. Thanks, Sstefan

Date organization

I've created a new page Date organization with my idea about how the dates (years) should be oraganized. It means we get rid of the Category: Dates and Category: History, the latter replaced with Category:Events. Feedback required. Tjoneslo 20:55, 23 December 2006 (UTC)

Peter Gray and the Cruicble Campaign

The Arden Society page you just posted is from Peter Gray and his Cruicible campaign. Quite a lot of it has been posted on the Freelance Traveller site. But if you are really interested, go dig your way through the TNE RCES archive. This would fall into the heading of "Holy crap, there's a lot of stuff". He also posts to the Traveller TNE group on Yahoo. And the Archives there contain a lot of this information too. I just had to tell someone and post the links before they get lost. Tjoneslo 15:50, 19 January 2007 (UTC)

Thanks for the info.. too bad I can't get into the Yahoo group until I get home tonight (blocked site at work)..

More detail to the date category pages

I think more detail to the date category page headers would be a good idea, but I don't think we should duplicate all of the dates in the category in the header. Right now the each date contains only one or two bits of infomation, so it's easy to duplicate, but as there gets to be more information in each date, this will be harder.

The Category: Years of the Third Imperium with a set of broad categories (e.g. Founding (0-200), consolidation wars (200-600), Civil war (600-650), solomani crisis (650-1000), peace (1000-1116) would be good, but you really don't want more that a dozen or so entries. Tjoneslo 14:18, 4 January 2007 (UTC)

Rim-Trailing States

[2]

The following are entries from either the published domain, or from work of people that I have known. All dates are Third Imperial Standard unless otherwise noted. Note: sources in square brackets [source] are rewritten for the proper format of this page, while [source]s in bold are direct quotations. Rewriting only paraphrases the material because it may have been of a different focus, than that of the Interstellar state as subject. Last update: 21 February 1998.

Click here for the dot map showing various states I have either extrapolated or taken from published material.

Click here for the dot map showing the J-1 mains of the region. I have added some grid lines for sector boundary visibility and added another row of sectors to Rimward and Trailing. Also, I have made Terra and Glea (in the Glean cluster) with emphasized red dots like Kaggushus (Hub/Ershur).

Click here for the dot map showing the jump isolated systems. All systems reachable by J-2 are Cyan colored. Those which require J-3 are in Yellow. Those requiring J-4 are in Magenta. There is a rimward area accessible on by J-3 or greater which is rather extensive, and I have left this in white to show the region (mainly in Aldebaran and Neworld). The vicinity of Centrax that shows a peninsula separated by red dots is accessible by J-2, but only from the Trailing edge, and not any other direction.

Click here for the map from Different Worlds #9 that is the predecessor map to the map of the region around the Imperium which appeared in the Library Data supplements from the Classic Traveller period.

LIBRARY DATA

Alurzan Cartel: 1124 to 1130

The Cartel is an overgrown trading league with no central government, dominated by Gilboa (2211 Diaspora) and Bifirs (2112). Gilboa is the site of a Judiciate-backed succession war, which keeps its TL 10 troops quite busy at home. Bifirs as well finds that its TL 8 troops are kept quite busy putting out other fires caused by Judiciate intrigue. If this weren't enough, the Cartel must send its starships elsewhere for maintenance and repair, usually to Netti (2213) or to the Hewes Dyad, where they are usually the targets of terrorist threats, presumably from Judiciate interests. [AGD]

Anubian Trade Coalition: 1080 to 1130

Descended from Solomani colonists, the Anubian Trade Coalition is a somewhat young, aggressive trade empire centered in the Anubis subsector of the Hinterworlds. After purchasing jump technology from the Imperium, the ATC has built itself up to a TL 12 culture. Using commodities from the worlds in its interior, the ATC's ultimate goal is to economically dominate the sector and to open the markets beyond.

In using their psionic abilities, ATC traders seem for a long time to have had an unfair edge over much of their competition. Conducting merchantile ventures when you know your client's limits and desires makes success almost certain. [C39|C44]

Backman Cluster: 1124 to 1130

.

Bootean Federation: 704 to 1130

One of Terra's first major colonization efforts, the worlds of the rich Near Bootes Cluster prospered throughout the Rule of Man. Even when the Long Night fell, the 18 worlds of the Near Bootes Union survived almost unscathed. By Dawn, the Union was a major political and economic power. When the Solomani Autonomous Region was established, many Union officials stepped forward to take key positions in the new government. The Union became the Federation, and one of its Chairmen, Karl Scott, co-authored the Charter.

Where in earlier times the Booteans led Confederation politics, more recently they have opposed Party policy and growing SolSec power. Large segments of the Federation leadership endorse the Reform Movement, even going so far as to grant membership to the aliens of Labrys. In 5630 AD, two Booteans--Joshua Dahvin and Kathleen Ryan-Cox became High Councilors despite right-wing efforts to block their appointment. The two have boldly spoken out in an effort to temper Party aggressiveness with typical Bootean tolerance. [S&A]

Corona Regnum: -2199 to 1130

A client state on the coreward-most edge (a "stretched" state reaching around to the spinward edge) of the Hive Federation. This Second Imperial client state would later form a critical diplomatic balance point which (along with the Hiver-K'kree War) would see the halt of coreward Hive expansion. It is this unique role which accounts for the similarly unique distribution of the Regnum's star systems. Also, these ties to the Rule of Man account for the relatively advanced tech level of this distant Imperial client state.

Later, Hive authors would attribute this move as the first external manipulation of Hiver society. It is for this reason that Hivers call the Corona Regnum the first of the Five Curiosities. [HQ4]

Council of Leh Perash: ? to 1130

Protruding its boundaries into the Aquila subsector, the Council of Leh Perash is a Hiver-allied client state spread across 42 systems--eight of which lie in the Hinterworlds. This state takes its name from the meeting which gave birth to the state. Humans and human minor races compose only 20 percent of the council's population, with the other 80 percent being Jenda (a minor alien race indigenous to the realm) and other Federation races.

Though operating at TL13, the council is known, primarily, for its outstanding achievements in genetic engineering--the source of its primary exports. Its products range from modification in the human genome to tailored microorganisms. Part of its success is due to the nature of Jenda genetics and the fresh approach to the field.

The planet Sysix (Hinterworlds 2935 B623300-B), along the council's spinward edge, serves not only as a major trade world for Hiver goods, but is also supporting extensive Federation trade exploration ventures in Aquila, Tempri, and Sontra subsectors. Recently, these missions have had some heated contact with Solomani traders working the spinward sectors, but tensions seemed to have dropped suddenly, without any apparent explanation. [C39]

Cumberan Confederation: 1127 to 1130

The Confederation, previously a trade collective within the Solomani borders, declared its independence from the Solomani Confederation in 1127, renouncing its provisional membership. This was in response to increasing Solomani meddling in the internal affairs of the collective's worlds. The conflict was over the large number of Vegan refugees, displaced by Solomani reduction of the Vegan Autonomous Region, who had settled on Cumber. Solomani leaders saw the Vegan issue as a natural link between Cumber and Daibei, and sought to eliminate it. However, their persecution of Cumberan Vegans only exacerbated the issue, and led to the Cumberan withdrawal to form its own confederation. Since its withdrawal, the Cumberan Confederation has traded emissaries with Daibei and the Aslan.

The Cumberan secession was a blow to Solomani prestige, but rather than fan the flames by directly opposing the Cumberan Confederation, the Solomani set up the New Order Vigilance Alliance. Although still maintaining nominally civil relations with the Solomani, the Cumberan Confederation knows that it must develop alternative alliances and trade routes for when the Solomani eventually drop pretenses and actively oppose them. The Duwamish League represents one such initiative; the Cumberans have also deployed some of their excellent TL 12 lift troops to several worlds of the sector. [AGD]

Cytrialin Unity: ? to 1130

Entwined culturally, and to some degree biologically, the human-derived Lamura Teg and their small, spidery-legged, alien counterparts, the Lamura Gav (collectively, just the "Lamura"), have built a technologically advanced culture from the ruins of a hostile world which was originally home to neither race. Though anatomically disimiliar, their dependence and understanding of each other has given them a uniquely liberal perspective on the nature of the universe. They view the universe as an open cycle of resources, with each aspect being part of the greater whole.

This view has led to their great respect for life and the environment. As one passage of the Cytrialin says, "I breathe in the body of my descendants while standing upon that of my ancestors." The Lamura have great respect for all races, based on "the common thread which has built the fabric of our societies."

Most members of the Cytrialin Unity are seldom found without one of the books of the Cytrialin--a collection of passages and phrases which detail the outlook of the Lamura races.

The Lamura seem to take great pride in quoting appropriate passages from the Cytrialin at times of personal crisis.

This seemingly fanatical devotion to their faith has led many in the Imperium to label them as religious fanatics, although the Cytrialin is better described as a philosophy of life, as it is void of strict dogma, ceremony, or supernatural deities.

The Cytrialin Unity sits at the cornerstone of the Hinterworlds, Glimmerdrift Reaches, Crucis Margin, and Leonidae sectors; and it spans 58 worlds with its TL14 culture. Its location has made it a trade nexus for traffic between the Imperium and the Two Thousand Worlds. A web of trade routes radiates out from the world of Alike, within the Hinterworlds' borders.

Though politically independent from the Imperium, the Cytrialin Unity maintains good relations and regular trade with its giant, spinward neighbor. Aside from some inconvenient trade disruption, the advent of the Imperial Civil War has had little effect on the Unity. [C39]

Dawn League: 1197 to 1201 see League of the New Dawn

Dethenes Technical Alliance: -2150 to 1130

The Dethenes Subsector (subsector A of Old Expanses) was originally colonized during the Great Solomani Expansion period, early in the Rule of Man.

The subsector is named for its capital, Dethenes. Today, Dethenes is also the capital of the Dethenes Technical Alliance. The alliance seeks to keep its technological secrets (TL 16) from travelling outside its borders. The worlds of Elyan, Bincia, and Kri (0201, 0302, 0304 Old Expanses) are also members of the alliance.

Travellers are advised to exercise caution when travelling to the alliance worlds--if accused of a crime when on one of the worlds of the alliance, the unwary traveller may be incarcerated for decades. [TD12|HP1|HP3]

Dingir League: -???? to 545

.

Duwamish League: 1124 to 1130

The newest and most precarious of Diaspora's polities, the Duwamish League sits astride the Duwamish Belt, the main jump-1 route to trailing from the Hijiri subsector. It owes its survival to two factors: the fact that the Cumberan Confederation has been subsidizing the League to maintain a spinward-trailing route against the day when the Solomani Confederation cuts off their trade through Confederation lanes, and the fact that airless Alki (1136) is the site of a forward deployed naval mini-depot abandoned by Lucan's forces at the end of the Black Wars. [AGD]

Easter Concord: -1572 to 426

A stable confederation centered on the Concord subsector of the Solomani Rim, founded early in the Long Night. During the troubles occasioned by the fall of the Rule of Man, the major worlds of the area formed a union for mutual defense, with its capital at Easter (1802 Solomani Rim). [S10] The Easter Concord grew into a trade and commerce union as well, and remained a secure bastion of civilization throughout the Long Night, being formally dissolved only upon its admission into the Third Imperium in 426. [AM6]

Ecclesiasty of Narquel: 1127 to 1130

Founded in 1127, the Ecclesiasty successfully combines the spiritual duty to convert with the secular desire to expand. Now uniting three worlds under its banner, the Ecclesiasty looks to bring other industrial (particularly shipbuilding) worlds into its embrace. It correctly perceives resistance from nearby Soyuz and Gasudarsk, which have contracted with the shipyards at Neto to build military ships for them. These two worlds, linked by trade routes through the Rann system, uneasily monitor Narquel's growth and increasing aggressiveness.

The Ecclesiasty maintains armed forces at TL 12, although these are rarely seen outside Ecclesiasty borders. [AGD]

Estados Unidos Grande de Quesada: 1124 to 1130 see Grand United States of Quesada

Galiano/Jayna (1519-A768497-F Old Expanses):

Capital of the Old Expanses sector. Galiano was formerly the capital of the Twenty-One Worlds Empire during the Long Night, and was one of the first planets in the sector to become a member of the Third Imperium. Its astrographical position and planetary characteristics also make it an ideal capital. [HP4]

Just prior to the Rebellion, and the Solomani retaking their portions of the sector, the capital was moved to Vaward (1106 Old Expanses). Margaret's staff had influenced the Domain of Sol to move numerous Domain-level functions to Vaward for various reasons, which turned out fortunate for their faction later on. This explains the relative ease of the quick relocation from Galiano when it was needed. Note also that Duke Galiano retains all original heraldly and titles, without Vaward references. [HQ4]

Gniivi: pre-Long Night to 1130?

A nonhuman, minor alien race spanning the Hinterworlds-Leonidae border, the Gniivi use their jump-2 capable ships to maintain their 23-world state. Though engaging in trade with nearby client states--the Imperium, the Solomani, the Two Thousand Worlds, and the Hive Federation--the Gniivi are fiercely protective of their independence.

A race of large, long-lived creatures, the Gniivi's expansion has been slow and deliberate--growing only when resources allow.

Recently, there have been reports that the Gniivi may be linked to commercial raiding in the sector's core, but their governing body adamantly denies such charges, claiming the Gniivi would see no benefit from such ventures. [C39]

Grand United States of Quesada: -???? to 1130

A large member-state, the Estados Unidos Grande de Quesada is a lively republic in both the lives of the people and the political arena. The Quesadans speak fluent Spanish, with Anglic as a second language, and have a proud Hispanic heritage. Recently, the Quesadans have been plagued by an inordinate amount of political upheaval. They have seen three Grande Presidantes in as many years, and SolSec is widely believed to have had a hand in ousting them from power. [S&A]

Hanuman Systems: -???? to 1130

The Hanuman Systems lie at the Confederation's trailing border. The Hanuman Systems owe their name to the local religion, an unusual mix of old Terran Hinduism and modern evolutionary theory. The Systems' inhabitants believe Hanuman--the Hindu monkey god--to be the patron deity of all primates, including humans. They have gained a widespread reputation for their frequent ceremonies and devotions.

Interestingly, the Hanuman religion intrigued Hiver merchants across the border. While Hiver culture as a whole ignores religion, many Hivers found their curiosity and need for individuality engaged. One trader nest invented a deity, Palibat, to serve as racial patron for the Hivers. Worship of Palibat spread as the Hiver merchants travelled, and the priests of Hanuman eventually saw fit to officially endorse it.

This unorthodox, jointly held creed has long helped smooth relations between our people and the Hive Federation. For this reason, it has withstood the disapproval of conservative Party officials dismayed by the cultural merger of Solomani and non-humans. Most Party members see the Hanuman-Palibat faith as beneficial, however. In addition to the thousands who visit annually as diplomats and businessmen, many more come simply as tourists. [S&A]

Hewes Dyad: 1124 to 1130

The unified worlds of Raasaraa (2314 Diaspora) and Hewes (2414). [AGD]

HubWorlds: 1133 to ????

During the Rule of Man, this cluster of worlds served as the administrative center for the Imperium. Hiroshi II made Kaggushus the capital, renaming it Hub/Ershur. However, a few major centers were also dispersed among neighboring worlds in about a two-parsec sphere. The Hub referred to these worlds collectively.

Kaggushus was counted as among the more important worlds of the Third Imperium, but played only minor roles in its history.

After the Collapse (1130), the HubWorlds maintained sporadic contact with each other using a handful of surviving ships. Serious commerce resumed in 1181 when Kaggushus began constructing new starships of its own. Starship operations remained under strict government control until regulations were relaxed in 1199. This permitted commercial ownership of ships, freeing vessels for broader speculations and exploration.

As of 1200, many worlds of Ershur subsector have yet to be visited. This is changing as HubWorlds authorities survey and recontact the surrounding worlds. However, other vessels, aside from those bearing official teams, also venture the borders. [TNE]

Ithklur Aexzz: -1802 to ????

.

Khavle Accordment: 1124 to 1130

This small, inward-looking polity continues to exist only because of its crucial location, astride the trade routes to Margaret's Domain, and the assistance of the Union of Sufren. Plagued by piracy coming up from the Pasdaruu subsector and without a central government, the Accordment merely responds to events, rather than attempting to control them. Accordment troops are equipped to TL 11, but rarely deploy off the four member worlds, and never outside of the subsector. [AGD]

Kidunal Abeyance: 1124 to 1130

.

Kostov Confederate Republic: -???? to 1130

Known throughout the Confederation as a fierce democracy, the Kostov Konfedaar Republik requires that each citizen over the age of 17 vote in the annual elections. These elections decide all important aspects of the Republik's government. A vast government bureaucracy sees to it that the results of each election are quickly tabulated and enacted.

A congress is elected each year to tend to foreign interests and insure the continuation of democratic ideals. While it often proves difficult to get an immediate decision on minor matters, special elections are held in the event of great national need. Each world in the Republik handles its democracy in a slightly different way, but the overall effect is nonetheless that of a large, modern participatory democracy. [S&A]

League of the new Dawn: 1197 to 1201 see Reformation Coalition

Near Bootes Union: -???? to 704 see Bootean Federation

New Order Vigilance Alliance: 1124 to 1130

Not a true independent polity, NOVA was set up by SolSec as a counter-weight to the Cumberan Confederation. NOVA acts as a proxy for the Solomani, and can engage Cumber in open warfare, allowing the Confederation to preserve its strength for other needs. Despite SolSec propaganda, widely dismissed by Diasporans, NOVA's worlds are not enthusiastic: passive resistance and active insurgency are common on Sunz (0237) and Vornam (0338). [AGD]

Nullian League: 1100 to 1130

Formed as a trading alliance in 992 as a response to the Solomani Rim War, the Nullian League formally took on governmental status in 1100. Several reasons cited were trade war with the Anubian Trade Coalition, distrust of the Outcasts of the Whispering Sky, and fear of civil war in Ral Ranta directly to Coreward. [C44] Many of the member worlds, had been Ral Ranta provincial worlds until the Rebellion of 1079. [HQ4]

Old Earth Union: -1110 to 588 and 1120 to 1130

During the Long Night, Terra became the capital of the Old Earth Union, which included most of Terra's early colonies. [AM6]

When Solomani forces retook Terra and her neighbors, the region's exact status was in doubt. After some debate, the region's leaders applied for entry into the Confederation as a member-state. They envisioned a reborn Old Earth Union, a direct successor to the original Old Earth Union, long since fallen to the Imperium. Chances for acceptance look favorable, but the survival of a strong pro-Imperial underground in the region has delayed a final decision. [S&A]

Outcasts of the Whispering Sky: pre-Long Night to 1130?

Small interstellar state in the Hinterworlds with 6 systems in Bruia subsector, 2 systems in Kandra subsector, and 4 systems in Silver Laurel subsector. [C39] One system is Leenitakot (1432), the ringworld of ancients legend. [AM5] The aliens that inhabit this realm are among the strangest known to starfaring races. These aliens call themselves the Outcasts of the Whispering Sky, and are commonly known as Stalkers.

The Stalkers are not warm to intrusions into their realm, to the frustration of xeonarcheologists wishing to study the unfinished ringworld. Only four expeditions to the ringworld have been granted to Imperial or Solomani (c.1120) science expeditions. Stalkers punish intruders with their lives, though many free-traders still risk the journey for unique spices and plant life, available nowehere else. [C39]

Protectorate of Alba: -2300 to present

Originally settled from Earth (Terra), the Alban Protectorate has always been a stable alliance of worlds. Actually, alliance describes too strongly the underlying nature of the Protectorate. A better term would be pact or even family of worlds.

A little more than one thousand extended families of Terran origin settled the region around present-day system named White (3001 Alpha Leonis). Their colonies had mutual origins on Earth, and continued these ties over interstellar distances between the worlds around White. The protectorate also includes some systems in the Old Expanses, and even more in Spica (Alpha Virginis) sector.

Originally outside the bounds of the Terran Confederation, the Protectorate later found itself within the confines of the Rule of Man. It was the fall of the latter, that really lead to the Protectorate as a formal arrangement, protecting the families from the encroaching Long Night all around.

The Protectorate has at no time been an interstellar government, but its capacity for mutual defense certainly qualifies it as an independent state. In fact, the view on these worlds is, "that government which governs less, governs best." The citizens view the Protectorate as in one of two states (or modes) at any time: active or inactive.

There have been only two times in history in which the Protectorate has been active: the Long Night, and from the Collapse until the New Era. Nobody to date (New Era reference) has been able to understand how the Protectorate survived Virus in tact. It is confirmable that they have done their share in combatting Vampire Fleets.

During the period the Protectorate was part of the Solomani Confederation, the Albans were given member-state status. With their inherent attitudes, they never played a significant role in Confederation politics. In fact, a number of worlds, as found elsewhere in the Confederation, are not formally member worlds either. All of this is permitted by the Charter of the Solomani States, though these worlds scoff at being called Solomani. [HQ4]

Protectorate of Cthonia: -???? to 1130

A mutual defense and trading coalition, the Protectorate worries about its uneasy position on the Imperial border. It maintains a large, sophisticated fleet against this threat, independent of Confederation control. Although legally entitled to such a navy by the Charter, the Cthonian armada has given cause for concern to Confederation officials.

The Confederation might well intervene, if it were not for the Cthonian Navy's unique training methods. The Cthonians employ an innovative technique - "electro-psychoanalysis" to the popular media--which combines psychological testing with intense study of neural activity. Using this technique, the Cthonians can single out future leaders at a very young age and recruit them into military schools. As the Protectorate has recently opened the program to other Solomani worlds, the Confederation stands more to gain by leaving the Cthonians in peace. [S&A]

Ral Ranta: -1202 to 1130

Deep in the Long Night, the region at the coreward end of the spinward border of the Hinterworlds was the fragmentary domain of warlords, each ruling only two or three worlds. During the frequent fighting which engulfed the region (due to the seeding of civilizations by Solomani sleeper ships) several warlords would often ally with one another to lead combined fleets against a common threat, designating one of their number as supreme leader of the combined expedition. One such man was Rihala Ariden Llewsak of Nummen.

Finally at the end of a particularly successful campaign, he declined to return the combined fleets to the warlords and declared himself Warlord Supreme. Five other warlords declared their loyalty to Llewsak. Through conquest he initially expanded his empire to encompass four subsectors and established it as the dominant power in the region. Then through more conventional means, Ral Ranta expanded to control many systems in the Rim-Trailing portions of the Old Expanses and the Rim-Spinward portions of the Hinterworlds finally spanning 10 subsectors.

The empire grew steadily for some time, but it lost momentum with each new Warlord Supreme, until about -94, when Ral Ranta captured its last new world. From then until approximately 130, the empire stagnated, becoming self-centered and divisive. Then several worlds in Glimmerdrift declared independence, and a civil war ensued with the Ral Rantans failing to return the independence-minded worlds. Further fighting with Ral Ranta's age-old enemy, the Twenty-One Worlds Empire, on the spinward border, brought about a long period of decay that had slowly reduced Ral Ranta to the small, weakened state it was only a few short years ago. [C39|C47|HQ4]

After contact with the Third Imperium in 367, and then after nearly a century of fighting with them, Ral Ranta began trading with the Imperials. Both warring and trading with the Imperium had only continued the decay of the Ral Ranta. The Imperium ran covert operations through the whole period of contact, designed to alter the structure of this Long Night pocket empire. [C39]

The Imperium's operations have slowly wore down the control structure of the Ral Ranta, and as recently as 1079 most of their Old Expanses possessions had seceded or rebelled. The Nullian Rebellion of 1079 saw the last major group of systems secede and Imperial support has led to independence for many of these worlds, and Imperial control for a few. Many former Ral Ranta systems in Nullia subsector had been members of a trading alliance along Beyerly's Path into the Old Expanses. By 1100, the trading league formed a true government: The Nullian League. [HQ4]

With the collapse of the Imperium and the raid by Solomani fleets, Ral Ranta has recently shown a spark of its former glory. Although the present Warlord Supreme is old and ineffective, several younger warlords are vying for power. The next leader may well be able to lead Ral Ranta to new glories. [C47]

Reformation Coalition: 1201 to ????

A coalition of worlds in the Old Expanses which, with Hiver assistance, recovered enough from the throes of the Virus, to reach out to the stars again. Comprising systems in subsectors M and N of the sector. Formerly, the League of the New Dawn or Dawn League for short. [TNE]

Rule of Man: -2204 to -1776

.

Solomani Confederation: 871 to 1130

Solomani space embraces tens of sectors and thousands of worlds. During the Rule of Man, our ancestors spread far coreward and spinward of Terra. Subsequent migrations in all directions have carried our people even farther. Yet when we think of home, we still think of the worlds around Terra--the worlds of the Solomani Confederation. [S&A]

MEMBER-STATES: Bootean Federation (Solomani Rim) Grand United States of Quesada (Aldebaran) Hanuman Systems (Langere) Kostov Confederate Republic (Neworld) Old Earth Union (Solomani Rim) Protectorate of Alba (Alpha Leonis) Protectorate of Cthonia (Alpha Leonis) Third Reformed French Confederate Republic (Aldebaran) Turin Consolidation (Alpha Leonis)

Sufren, Union/Covenant of: 1124 to ????

The Union dates back to the Long Night, and the ties between its worlds have remained strong through the years, to reappear again during the Hard Times. One of Diaspora sector's strongest polities, the Union is clearly pro-Margaret, relying on trade with her high technology worlds. The Union has a policy of supporting the Khavle Accordment, knowing that if it fails, the Union will be cut off from its trading partners in Margaret's Frontier. So far such help has not used Union troops or ships, but starmercs on retainer to the Union.

The Union maintains a fleet of TL 14-15 starships, and TL 14 ground troops. These are sent abroad only to meet deployments of Vassalry Judiciate troops. For other purposes, the Union retains starmerc groups, chief among which is Skerrit Adan's highly regarded unit, which recently assisted the Khavle Accordment. [AGD]

Terran Confederation: -2398 to -2204

Note that there is some dispute over the date of the founding of the Terran Confederation. This author has chosen not to use the date of -2499 used by academia for the founding , rather the more widely circulated date of -2398. [HQ4]

Interstellar government consisting of Terra and its colony worlds. Modern historians consider the foundation of the Terran Confederation to date from the signing of the Treaty of New York in -2499. Essentially, the treaty placed the armed forces of the major nations of Terra under the centralized control of the United Nations (until that time, a loose organization of the nation states of Terra, with no governmental authority). In addition, the treaty formalized the changes that had been made in the structure of the UN up to that time. The Secretary General was granted a wider range of executive powers than before. The Secretariat, previously an unofficial advisory group of representatives from major nation states, was made the chief legislative body. The General Assembly was retained, but it was an institution without real power and served merely as a forum for debate among the representatives of both major and minor nations. The Security Council was dispensed with altogether.

After the discovery of jump drive and the initial interstellar colonization efforts, representatives from the colony worlds were admitted to the General Assembly (and, later on, to the Secretariat). Throughout history, Terran representatives (and thus, Terran interests) dominated the Secretariat and General Assembly.

With the admission of the first colonial representative, the United Nations changed its name to the Terran Confederation. Modern historians, for simplicity, use this term exclusively.

The Terran Confederation fought a series of interstellar wars with the Vilani Imperium over the period -2408 to -2219. These wars ultimately resulted in the fall of the Vilani Imperium. The Confederation was dissolved -2204 upon the proclamation of the Rule of Man. See Nth Frontier War, and the essay on The Solomani in Supplement 8, Library Data (A-M), pages 36-39. [S11] See also, the Terran Merchantile Community.

Terran Merchantile Community: -1690 to -1110

Formed as a corporation, called the Terran Merchantile Community, it gradually grew in power and wealth. At the same time, severe restrictions by the Rule of Man prohibited Terra (and other worlds of the former Terran Confederation) from building an effective navy. The Terran Merchantile Community circumvented the restrictions by building a merchant fleet that toed a very fine line between commercial ships and naval vessels. The ships carried enough armament to protect themselves from pirates and raiders, but not enough to classify them as naval vessels. The mechant fleet made Terra and its fellow worlds in the TMC a formidable commercial force.

When the Rule of Man collapsed, the Terran Merchantile Community had a space fleet to patrol its systems and to replace the now gone Second Empire fleets. The TMC's merchant fleet cushioned the blow of the Long Night and made it possible for Terra to survive in relative comfort.

Well into the Long Night, the Terran Merchantile Community took over political responsibilities and became an interstellar government--the Old Earth Union. At about the same time, the numerous splinter states of the Rule of Man emerged: the Easter Concord (including most worlds within ten parsecs of Easter) and the Dingir League (all worlds within five parsecs of Dingir) were two which took hold in the Solomani Rim. [AM6]

Terran Republic: 11?? to ????

.

Third Reformed French Confederate Republic: -???? to 1130

This large state is a union of three French member-states and a number of independent worlds. Although powerful, the inefficiency of the Republic's government makes an eventual breakup a virtual certainty. If and when that happens, the region may well become a hotbed of internal strife.

That inefficiency stems not only from the region's size and diversity, but also from the collapse of the former administration. A recent coup deposed the old military governors, replacing them with a weak body of civilian ministers. Many rumors of SolSec involvement in this fiasco have surfaced. A common belief, supported by many analysts, holds that the Confederation saw the Republic's growing power as a threat. [S&A]

Turin Consolidation: -???? to 1130

The Consolidation began with a group of religious emigres who fled Terra during the Interstellar Wars. Bearing many relics and cultural icons with them, the Turin settlers never wavered in their piety. The Consolidation has long been the home of the Brotherhood of SenWenclus, an ancient religious order, and the elite fighting force called the Knights of St. George.

The Brotherhood and the Knights work hand in hand in spreading their faith across human space. The Brotherhood's priests have often called on the Knights to help "convert" worlds unresponsive to the message. During the Solomani Rim War, the Knights stood among the Solomani's fiercest fighters. Absolutely committed to their cause, the Knights undergo at least five years of rigorous religious and military schooling. [S&A]

Twenty-One Worlds Empire: -1660 to 233

Presently a subsector located in the G position of the Old Expanses, the name Twenty-One Worlds was originally attached to the Twenty-One Worlds Empire, which was a pocket of civilization in the Old Expanses during the Long Night. The Twenty-One Worlds Empire managed to hold together by one means or another through most of the Long Night, but finally fell a couple of centuries before Dawn. [HP4] The capital of the Empire was at Galiano/Jayna.

Before its fall, the Twenty-One Worlds Empire had maintained a centuries old conflict with the Ral Ranta, a human-dominated state which had sprung up later in the Long Night. Ral Ranta had controlled a majority of systems along the Trailing edge of the Old Expanses. [C39]

After Ral Ranta began expanding Rimward, circa -600, traders from the Twenty-One Worlds Empire met their spinward neighbors and a short time later, conflicts between the two cultures made war inevitable. The Twenty-One Worlds slowly pushed back the Ral Rantan frontier. This however, was not a war of conquest or expansion, it was one of basically economics and self-defense. [HQ4]

Unity of Promise: 1124 to 1130

The Unity of Promise has one goal: to see that its six member worlds survive. Surrounded by a sea of raiding and lawlessness, and only eight parsecs from the Solomani Frontier, these worlds have little extra strength to spend on expansion or preemptive attacks on their enemies. Unity troops hardly ever leave the six member systems, and usually serve as marines for the UP Navy. The Unity also makes extensive use of starmercs, but usually pays them in kind, rather than in cash. Starmercs in UP service are required to prominently display the Unity's star symbol on their equipment and uniforms.

Knowing that expansive Solomani ambitions seek to undermine already existing governments, the unity maintains a listening post at Lefiguura (3132 Diaspora) in Khulam subsector, one of four remaining Scout bases in the sector. [AGD]

Vassalry Judiciate: 1124 to 1130

The Judiciate is locked in mortal combat with the Union of Sufren. Its worlds, long commercial rivals of the coreward Union worlds, are now military-political rivals. The Judiciate intends to control the coreward end of the sector. It is attempting this by destabilizing the Khavle Accordment, thereby cutting the Union's crucial trade with Margaret's Domain, and instigating further succession wars among the worlds of the Alurzan Cartel.

The Judiciate grew out of the ducal succession wars of the mid-1120s that resulted from Lucan's gutting of the Imperial Moot. These wars included the forces of ex-Duke Geraldo of Alurza, ex-Duke Withers of Pasdaruu, pro-Lucan Duke Ilirikgaadli of Sufren (who had been banished from that planet), three new planetary dukes sent by Lucan, several megacorporations, and the civic governments of several worlds. As these wars ground on, several claimants allied themselves with planetary commercial interests to keep their claims alive. These alliances became dominated by the commercial interests, and gave birth to the Judiciate, based at Backman (2209 Diaspora), which retains the embittered, unseated nobles as figureheads.

Because Backman's TL 12 troops are used for operations in the Sufren and Alurza subsectors, Hervestia is the source of troops for Judiciate operations further afield. These TL 7-9 troops can be encountered almost anywhere in the sector--the Judiciate, befitting its history, is notorious for meddling in the affairs of other worlds--and are easily recognized from their armbands sporting a yellow disk crossed by green diagonals. [AGD]

Vegan Polity/Autonomous District: -2204 to 1130

The Vegan Autonomous District is inhabited by a race which humans call the Vegans, after the bright star near their homeworld. They are roughly humanoid in body shape (two legs, two arms, and a head), but completely non- human in detail. They are naturally long-lived with a lifespan of over 200 standard years.

The Vegans received the jump drive about -6000, from Vilani-influenced traders, and colonized several nearby worlds before being absorbed by the First Imperium. They were severely restricted under Vilani rule, as were all races who resisted being integrated into the rigid Vilani culture. Thus, they welcomed Terran victory in the Interstellar Wars and the advent of the Rule of Man. The Vegan Polity prospered in the Rule of Man and survived the Long Night largely intact, but was broken into individual planetary states by the Third Imperium, which allowed no threats to its sovereignty. [S10 The Vegans]

The Vegan homeworld and its earliest colonies were absorbed into the First Imperium in -4404. Under the Solomani, human colonies were established on many Vegan worlds to maintain Solomani influence there, and Solomani governors were installed on all Vegan worlds. [S11]

After the pyrrhic victory over the Solomani at Terra in 1002, the Imperium found that it could not completely conquer and absorb the Solomani Sphere. The Imperial high command decided to create the Vegan Autonomous District to act as a counterweight to the remnants of the Solomani Confederation. The Vegans have complete internal control over their district, but free passage is guaranteed for Imperial citizens and goods.

Although many factors have contributed to the present peace and stability along the Solomani Rim, it cannot be denied that the creation of the VAD has achieved its original purpose.

The Vegan District is under a single, centralized government. State power is contained in civil service, chosen and promoted by competitive examination. [S11]

Worlds without Description

You have added a bunch of worlds that only seem to have a single UWP. I would not think that these are appropriate articles. There is UWP only data for thousands of worlds. I would think that we would want to only include ones that have something of a discription for them. Dcorrin 13:21, 6 March 2007 (UTC)

Removing World List from spinward Marches

Any particular reason why you removed the world list from the marches? It didn't seem like too long a list to me, at least currently. Dcorrin 12:28, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

It may be something we want to think about a little bit. Spinward Marches is a worst case sector, where if you include the BTC writeups you will have 439 entries on that list. We should have a policy where the list is too big and needs better organization or to be split by subsector. Tjoneslo 12:56, 11 April 2007 (UTC)
My thought was just that. With the mapped subsectors showing the linked worlds it seemed redundant to keep updating that listing. SStefan
Its your call, though we should probably have some sort of common criteria for this, such as more than 4 lines of worlds? Dcorrin 12:31, 18 April 2007 (UTC)

Chronor maps

Where did you get this "Image:Chronor.png" image of the Chronor subsector? I know it's online somewhere but I can't find it. I'll create the image map for these pictures as well so users can choose between them for their subsector maps. Tjoneslo 11:28, 17 April 2007 (UTC)

It took me a few to find it again....
