McCrawley class Attack Transport

The McCrawley class Attack Transport is a small vessel used to transport Marine Task Forces, built around reinforced marine battalions. The cargo bays are used to carry the basic load in provisions, ammo and supplies as well as combat vehicles for planetary strike missions. Small scale surgical strikes are preferred over full scale planetary assaults and invasions. These are interventions to address imperial concerns and not designed to take and hold planets.

Description / Specifications

This class uses a partially streamlined close hull structure which combined with its fuel scoops and on board fuel purification permit wilderness gas giant refueling when necessary. The low 1G acceleration makes operations in large gravity wells problematic, without long acceleration orbital plots with shallow atmospheric insertion to achieve a safe escape vector. A combat high guard position is not an option for these vessels. They have jump 4 drives and are capable of fleet level mobility. Inexpensive for its size, it has 126 naval crew, 23 officers and 103 ratings and enlisted. There are 11 command, 11 engineering, 56 gunnery, 19 flight and 19 service crew. It carries 1,295 Marines of an Interface Task Force. The quarters are cramped with the equivalent of 708.5 staterooms in double occupancy. Officers get small private quarters and the rest share larger communal living crew bays. There are six 50 dton Modular Cutters for service and interface craft. There are no drop capsules and this vessels doesn't usually make combat drops. Grav Vehicles held in the cargo bay are used to deliver troopers to the surface. There are 8 lowberths used for medical patients, captives or prisoners.

The armament is limited to six 50 dton missile bays. These are often loaded for planetary surface bombardment with deadfall ordinance. The rest of the weapon batteries utilize light weight turret based weapon systems. The eight triple pulse laser turrets fire as a single battery to cope with aggressor small craft. Six dual fusion gun turrets fire as twelve point defense batteries. Eighteen triple sand caster turrets each fire independently as do four single particle accelerator turrets.

It is equipped with a model 9 fib computer and maximum meson and nuclear damper screens. This design serves with the 8th Fleet, among others. The expectation is that it travels with naval escorts when operating beyond imperial borders.

History & Background / Dossier

These hulls were originally intended as civilian heavy merchants to be sold as merchant marine vessels to a friendly client state. That diplomatic relationship soured and the hulls were appropriated and re-purposed for sector military transport starlift command. They work extensively with allied colonial formations. Small marine cadres train member states elite and special forces in the use of imperial grade advanced weaponry for the defense of the realm.
