Topas is a poor, non-agricultural, preindustrial and moderate population desert hellworld with a population of over a hundred million, but not yet at a billion sophonts.
- The inhabitants of this world struggle to survive in the life-threatening environment of a desert hellworld.
- This world has no free-standing water.
- The world is a preindustrial one, which cannot produce adequate materials to maintain a modern, star-faring society. These items must be imported at considerable cost.
- It is unable to produce quality foodstuffs and must import them.
- This world has few prospects for significant economic development. The inhabitants of this world lead a bleak and constantly challenging existence.
- It is a Non-Aligned world dominated by human sophonts located in the New Islands Subsector of Reft Sector.
Astrography and Planetology[edit]
Stellar Data[edit]
World Atmosphere[edit]
Topas' atmosphere is too thin for Humans to breathe unaided, though thick enough to allow survival without a pressure suit. Compressor masks or sealed buildings are necessary. There is also a mildly radioactive taint, due to volcanic dust.
History and Background[edit]
The rather basic starport at Topas is used as a refuelling stop for vessels transiting between Serendip Belt and Neubayern. Some trade is carried on in the port, but Topas' tech level 7 economy cannot produce much to export and there is little of natural value on planet. The exception is a type of volcanic crystal which is prized as the basis of art objects.
World Starport[edit]
Topas has a Class D Starport, a poor quality installation which has few of the expected amenities. There is unrefined fuel for starships and a limited variety of ship provisions. There is no shipyard of any kind, but there may be parts and technical support for doing minor services and repair. Ports of this classification generally consist of only a downport, unless this is a trade port or system with an hostile environment mainworld.
World Population (P)[edit]
Topas has a population of 300,000,000 sophonts (hundreds of millions).
World Languages[edit]
World Government (G)[edit]
Topas is governed by an Impersonal Bureaucracy. The leadership of the government takes another form (democracy, dictatorship, oligarchy), but the bureaucracy dictates government policy and its execution. Government leadership is reduced to little more than figureheads and does not select the bureaucracy leadership or its members.
World Law (L)[edit]
Topas has a high law level with laws covering many areas of interactions of people, corporations, and the government. A few worlds with this law level may be Amber Zones. Any interaction with the judicial system requires an Advocate trained in the local legal system. Law enforcement is present almost everywhere, either as people or via technology. Legal proceedings can take weeks to months to resolve and involve a dozen or more people. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (outside private residences or visiting starships).
World Technology Level (T)[edit]
Topas possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.
- Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
- Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
- Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
- Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
- Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
- Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
- Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).
New Era[edit]
During the Regency era, the world is disputed territory between Serendip Belt (Reft 1323) and Neubayern (Reft 1822). [2]
