A Stormrider is an extremely small desert creature.
- It thrives in arid environments.
Physiology & Ecology[edit]
Stormriders got their name from their common dormancy habitat -- riding like sand particles in a windstorm. In the presence of moisture, a Stormrider "grain" leaves its dormant state and secretes a sticky, superglue-like substance that attaches it securely to a possible source of water and nutrients.
Diet & Trophics[edit]
Stormriders carried by a windstorm rapidly accumulate around a plant's wound and effectively seal it, protecting the plant from further water loss. The stormriders become parasites and shortly multiply into a large colony, which grows until it begins to tax the resources of its host.
Life Cycle & Reproduction[edit]
Another windstorm will eventually break the colony "knob" off the plant. Robbed of a source of moisture and nutrients, the colony breaks down into dormant stormrider grains.
History & Background / Dossier[edit]
It is believed that Stormriders are native to Holtan Rock, a desert world in Zarushagar Sector. The history of their appearance on other desert worlds in Zarushagar during the First Imperium seems to bear this out.
