Rimmen is a nonindustrial fluid world.

  • A fluid world has an oceanic geography consisting of heavily contaminated water or a substance such as ammonia, methane, hydrocarbons, or other exotic liquid.
  • It requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. Having to import most manufactured and high tech goods drives the price up for these items at this world.

Mainworld Data[edit]

Rimmen has a Good Starport with shipyards able of handling Spacecraft up to the Overhaul level, and provides Refined fuel. The main world is roughly 14,500 kilometers in diameter (1.25G), and is a Large terrestrial. The atmosphere is similar to a corrosive atmosphere, but extreme conditions cause the corrosive effects to defeat any protective measures in 2 to 12 hours. The surface is roughly 50 percent ammonia oceans, which qualifies it as a wet world. The main world has a general population of 200,000 local residents, which qualifies it as a Moderate population world. The local government is characterized as Balkanization, no central ruling authority exists. Visitors may find the law highly restrictive as weapons outside the home are regulated or restricted by local authorities.

Rimmen is a cold planet with average temperatures around −100°C.

Human life is limited to enclosed domes, primarily involve with mining of rare earth elements found on the world. There is no formal 'ownership' or government on the world, each group of domes operates independently.
The starport is privately and jointly owned by a consortium of mining entities on the world and is primarily for the berthing of trader ships (Standard berthing charge is Cr2500). The starport has a large number of shops and entertainment facilities.

Native Lifeforms[edit]

Rimmen has evolved silicon based lifeforms, mainly diatoms. Higher lifeforms are still carbon, and have developed resistance to the extreme cold.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

  • -1940
  • 628
    • A Scout ship from Skanor arrived and confirmed the previously documented charting of Rimmen. With it's extreme cold and ammonia oceans, it is fairly unsuitable for human habitation. However soil samples reported high levels of valuable ores and minerals.
  • 630
    • The first private domed settlement was constructed and mining operations started.
  • 664
    • Several hundred settlements were now scattered across the land mass of the world. A consortium was created in order to construct a starport and downport for more economical shipping.
  • 683
    • Starport completed.

World starport[edit]

Rimmen has a Class B Starport, a good quality installation which includes all the expected amenities including refined fuel for starships, brokerage services for passengers and cargo, and a variety of ship provisions. There is a shipyard capable of doing annual maintenance, overhauls and most kinds of repair, and construction of non-starships. Most ports of this classification have both a Highport and a Downport.

World technology level[edit]

Rimmen possesses a Technology Level of TL–7.

  • Common Communication technologies for this TL include: Early video and early satellite communication networks.
  • Common Power Generation technologies for this TL include: Early fuel cells, solar energy, and geothermal power sources.
  • Common Transportation technologies for this TL include:
    • Land: Improved automobiles, hovercraft, and bullet trains.
    • Water: Hydrofoils and early triphibians.
    • Air: Hang gliders and supersonic jets.
    • Space: Deep space probes and interplanetary spacecraft (System Craft).

World government[edit]

Rimmen has a Balkanized Government. There is no central world government. The world has several governments competing for control of the world. These may be allies, cooperating, competitors, or at war with each other.

World Law Level[edit]

Rimmen has a high law level with laws covering many areas of interactions of people, corporations, and the government. A few worlds with this law level may be Amber Zones. Any interaction with the judicial system requires an Advocate trained in the local legal system. Law enforcement is present almost everywhere, either as people or via technology. Legal proceedings can take weeks to months to resolve and involve a dozen or more people. All objects specifically manufactured as weapons are typically regulated or prohibited (outside private residences or visiting starships).
