The Republican Faction is a political faction within the government of the Third Imperium. The factions and sub-factions Imperial Republican Bloc generally fall within the Left or Liberal wings of the spectrum of Imperial politics and ideologies, falling generally to the left of the Imperial Centrist Party known as the Red Party.

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Republican Faction wishes to transform the Third Imperium from its current traditional Hereditary Monarchical form of leadership with a near-absolute ruler-for-life into a type of Interstellar Imperial Republic in which the traditional Hereditary Monarchy would notionally be replaced by either an Elected Monarch or an Elected Oligarchy acting as a type of Executive Council as Imperial Head of State. Some nobles of the Republican Faction want an Elected Monarch chosen by the Moot for a tenure of office lasting from 10 to 30 years, though there is a minority faction among the Republican Monarchists who support life-tenure for an elected monarch. Other Republican Moot members want to replace the monarchy entirely, to be replaced by an Elected Oligarchy serving as an Executive Council composed of seven to 12 members elected by the Moot, with individual council members serving terms of 10 to 30 years.

Additionally, the Republican Faction desires to expand Moot powers, turning the body into a true legislative body with legal authority rather than a mere advisory or deliberative one, albiet the elected monarch or council would retain veto power over bills passed by the Moot under the system as envisioned. The Republican Faction also wants to place the executive authority in the hands of a Council of Ministers appointed by the elected monarch or executive council, with ministers subject to a vote of no confidence in the Moot.

The Question of the Nobility[edit]

The Republican Faction primarily wishes to retain the Imperial Nobility, although they are divided on the question of who should have the authority to grant and revoke titles. Some want the Moot to have the power to grant and revoke noble status of the rank of baron or higher. Others want the Elected Monarch or Executive Council to have the authority to appoint Archdukes and Sector Dukes, subject to the approval of the Moot.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

The Republican Faction has had a vocal faction within the Imperial Moot to a greater or lesser degree during different periods of Imperial history, with roots in the period of the Non-dynastic Emperors which arose immediately prior to the period of the Imperial Civil War and the so-called Imperial Republic. The establishment of the extraordinary expedient of the "Right of Assassination" to deal with the problem of Cleon III as well as the later failure of a clear succession of both the Lentuli and Zhunastu family lines during the antebellum period led to the subsequent precedent of the choice of Non-dynastic Emperors by Moot ratification or confirmation of claimants as a standard practice in the period leading up to the events of the Imperial Civil War. The turmoil of this period and its sense that anyone of sufficient noble standing and ambition could potentially seize the throne with the right connections in the Moot or in the military led those who deprecated both the problems inherent in claimants by right of heritable descent as well as claimants by the right "connections" to the right "factions" or the "Right" of a claim by assassination to propose a constitutional formalization of the Imperial Republican system that clearly delineated the structure of the proposed legislative and executive system and its associated checks and balances as a solution to the problem of the "Barracks Emperors" and ascension to the Iridium Throne by "Right of Assassination".
