History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
When the original ancestors of the Sword Worlders arrived at Gram, their biggest ship, the troop transport Gram, was placed in orbit and used as a space station from then on. When it grew too small, new sections were added as needed, so the station grew with little overall planning. Except in the periods when Gram had no space travel at all, the station served as orbital port and fortress until -5 when the Gram was declared a historical monument and the station a noncombatant construction. Its weapons were disabled and its defensive tasks taken over by new, purpose-built orbital fortresses. Most of the Gram itself was sealed off from the public and the rest converted to a museum. The station's function as transfer point for goods and passengers remained intact and during the Five States Era, its permanent population grew to almost a million.
During the Gram-Sacnoth War (98-104) the station was considered non-combatant by all parties and consequently neither armed nor targeted, but it took some collateral damage in an attack that destroyed the nearby shipyard. Parts of the station were abandoned, and as trade slowed to a mere trickle of the pre-war volume, the population fell to about 50,000.
The station remained like that until the collapse of the Triple Dominion freed the nations on Gram from the restrictions against building ships on their own and some much-needed repair work was begun. The repairs were not completed until after the Gram Republic was formed in 371 and a reunified Gram began expanding its space industry and trade fleet extensively.
