A Laser is a technological device that produces a coherent beam of diffraction-limited single-frequency electromagnetic radiation that has numerous practical applications in both industry and the military.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
The term "Laser" as a word arose on ancient pre-spaceflight Terra, and was derived from a scientific acronym describing its principal of operation: Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. The Ancient Vilani name for the device was "Eshkhazem", taken from ancient Vilani legends and meaning "lightning of the gods".
Early research into coherent electromagnetic radiation began on ancient Terra (as it does on many worlds) by experimentation with the discrete quantized energy levels in the molecular bonds of certain chemical compounds (which typically emit and absorb in the microwave region of the Electromagnetic Spectrum). On ancient Terra, this led to experimental devices named with the acronym: Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, or MASER. With ongoing research experimentation proceeded by the successive utilization of the discrete quantized energy levels of various atoms electron orbitals, which typically emit and absorb radiation in the Optical (Ultraviolet thru Infrared) region of the Electromagnetic Spectrum). Initially called "Optical Masers", the acronym was eventually altered, and the term coined: Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, or LASER. This term eventually entered the Ancient English language as a proper noun and was passed down into Old Anglic as the generic overarching term for technology operating on the Electromagnetic Stimulated Emission principle, although the specific term "Maser" has survived to a more limited extent for Microwave-band Lasers as well. Since the early first development of the technology and employment of the Tunable Free-Electron configuration, Lasers can now generate coherent beams in virtually any wavelength desired from Radiowave thru X-Ray. While Gamma Ray Lasers have been experimented with, at the current state-of-the-art the energy cost and size are still prohibitive for common practical applications.
