Julia Langstrom
(3678AD–3730AD): Dr Julia Alicia Langstrom was a controversial scientific figure within the Distant Fringe.
Description[edit]
Langstrom was born on the orbital station in the Lon Mardos system (0733 Halcyon) in 3678AD and grew up watching the flashes of energy as starships transitioned to and from Jump space. She was a noted physicist and a leading researcher in the field of Jump Physics, inspired, she said, by her childhood. She held Tenure in the High Energy Research Department of the University of Selasia in 3702AD, one of the youngest to do so. She was also a classically trained musician, specialising in the ancient Terran Theremin.
History & Background[edit]
Dr Langstrom was the designer and namesake of the mythical Langstrom Drive, a jump-drive design reputedly capable of breaking the Jump-2 Barrier. Dr Langstrom was lost while conducting testing in the Hylan Spur sometime around 3730AD, along with any prototypes and most of her research. Her disappearance coincided with the arrival of the Voyagers and conspiracy theories abound, specifically regarding her having "called" them through her experiments.
It is doubtful whether the Langstrom Drive actually ever existed. Those few scraps that remain of her notes and research do offer intriguing clues but are so incomplete that they give no real insights. In more than a millennia nobody has been able to replicate her work and the Langstrom Drive is now generally dismissed as scientific wishful thinking.
