Imperial Civil Law
Imperial Civil Law is a subset of Imperial Law
Description (Specifications)[edit]
Imperial Civil Law is a subset of Imperial Law and is judged in Imperial Civil Courts. It is primarily concerned with interstellar commercial transactions and the governance of Imperial (i.e. Interstellar) Corporations and Megacorporations.
Corporate Law[edit]
The governance of chartered imperial companies (including Megacorporations) is of great interest to the Imperium. Failures of governance are defined under Imperial Civil Law.
Commercial Law[edit]
The smooth running of interstellar trade is the sine-qua-none of the Imperium and interstellar disputes regarding purported breaches of contract are the bread-and-butter of the Imperial Civil Courts. Imperial Civil Law is the basis under which all interstellar contracts are undertaken between parties resident inside the Imperium and is generally the law used for relations between Imperial parties and residents of Client States or other external Polities. The determination of legal system is trickier with residents of the Aslan Hierate, Zhodani Consulate or Hiver and K'kree polities as these empires do not acknowledge the Imperial Civil Law as superior to their own. Enforcement of judgements in Imperial Civil Law against Vargr resident outside the imperium is notoriously difficult.
Copyright[edit]
Both Terran and Vilani Law had a concept of copyright and this has transferred into Imperial Civil Law. The creator of a work has a right to benefit from the results of that work, and that right may be transferred to another through the Commissioning or Distribution processes for the work or abandoned entirely by waiving copyright. Enforcing copyright is a major source of income for the Imperial Civil Courts.
Small Claims[edit]
Small claims cases are usually dealt with under Local Law, although cases that take place on Imperial territory are handled by the Imperial Civil Courts system. Such cases almost always occur in starports, and the largest starports maintain Imperial Judges to handle them.
