The Passenger Carriage is a Railroad Vehicle. It requires a railroad network of the correct gauge to operate.
Description / Specifications[edit]
An enclosed passenger carriage designed to be towed by a railroad locomotive.
Hull / Suspension[edit]
An enclosed box-shaped hull constructed from wood and steel.
- Length: 19.5m, Width: 3.2m, Height: 3.8m.
- Overall Volume: approximately 237m³ (17.6 dTons).
- Unloaded Weight: 39,000 kg.
The overall volume measures the vehicles maximum dimensions and includes track clearance. The enclosed volume of the hull is lower.
The Passenger Carriage is fitted with wheels mounted in trucks, helping to distribute its weight and enabling it to traverse curves in the track.
- The vehicle is designed to operate on railroad networks. The gauge (the distance between the inner faces of the two rails) for railroad networks within the Distant Fringe is generally 1.5m and most examples of the Passenger Carriage are built to match that standard.
Power[edit]
At TL 5 the Passenger Carriage includes a small electrical generator (powered by the locomotive) and a storage battery. This can independently power the carriage's environmental systems for short periods of time.
Performance[edit]
Carriages are unpowered. They are moved by being coupled to a railroad locomotive.
- Carriages are fitted with an automatic coupling system. At TL 5 the linkage also includes pressure hoses that connect to the locomotive and operate the Carriages braking system.
Passengers / Cargo[edit]
The body of the carriage consists of an enclosed compartment fitted with clear windows and with a volume of 115m³ (8.2 dTons). There is seating for 40 passengers, along with a central walkway and a small fresher. The seating is relatively cramped. The vehicle has basic environmental protection (the hull is weatherproof but is not sealed) and is fitted with interior lights and heaters. The passenger compartment is accessed by end doors: generally there is access to adjacent carriages.
- Cargo Storage: 12m³ (0.8 dTons), consisting of a luggage storage area and overhead luggage racks.
- Maximum Load: 8,500 kg (including passengers).
- Maximum Gross Weight: 47,500 kg.
Equipment[edit]
Running lights.
History / Background[edit]
A wagon designed to move passengers along railroad networks. Vehicles of this type often have a distinctive livery.
