The Freni of Durnal are a technologically competent Minor Non-Human Race with a semi-humanoid appearance.

Description (Specifications)

There are six subspecies of Freni -- with morphological differences in size and colouration obvious even to aliens. These races once fought for dominance over the continent on which the species evolved, but eventually established a compromise. The word Freni means "Mosaic" which describes the philosophy pervading their society. The six subspecies are only marginally interfertile, so while their culture has long since blended, their racial identity has not. Friendships cross subspecies but families rarely do.

Physiology

A Freni head has two long frilled antennae which act as both ears and olfactory sensors. There are two large, wide-set black eyes and a trunk-like probiscis. Respiration occurs both through the fur and the probiscis, and as such the Freni tend to go 'shirtless' in breathable environments. Thin atmospheres are difficult for the Freni.

Freni are serial hermaphrodites, changing between male, female and neuter throughout their lifetimes. Once initiated by environmental and group pheromonal factors, in recent millennia it has become a matter of choice. A female Freni bears a single live infant after a one year gestation.

The Six Subspecies

• Type 3: Yellow fur; short and heavy build; straight antennae

• Type 4: White fur; moderate build; straight antennae

• Type 5: Orange fur; tall and thin build; curling antennae

• Type 6: Red fur; short and heavy build; curling antennae

Hybrids are rare on Durnal and uncommon even in expatriate communities. A hybrid is usually sterile and, if so, may be permanently of one sex.
