Far Rim Mining
Far Rim Mining was the rimward region of the Rimward Opportunities Development Organization.
Details / Specifications[edit]
Far Rim Mining was centered on Sal Marda and specialised in mineral and chemical extraction and processing. It was semi-autonomous and effectively operated as a small fiefdom. At best Far Rim was impersonal, at worst it was outright criminal. It signally failed to develop the worlds under its jurisdiction, instead stripping them of resources with scant regard for environmental or social consequences, and conducted a series of "expulsions" of those it deemed to be illegally within its territory. In 5326AD the class A starport at Sal Marda – the only class A port under Far Rim control – was destroyed, and soon afterwards Far Rim Mining folded as an entity.

History & Background[edit]
Far Rim Mining was founded as a subsidiary of the Rimward Opportunities Development Organization in 4950AD and given administrative authority over a broad swathe of territory lying along the Great Void. It was always a controlling organisation: it actively discouraged independent operations and settlement within the region that it administered. From the end of the 51st century to the middle of the 52nd century far Rim was involved in the "Expulsions", the removal of individuals and organisations it deemed to be "illegal", from within its territory. The Expulsions were often violent and were finally ended by the direct intervention of Rimward Opportunities Head Office and the replacement of all of Far Rim's senior staff. Despite this, Far Rim continued to persecute "undesirables", albeit on a far smaller scale and much more covertly.
Following the secession of the Pel Avena Cluster and the founding of the Rimward Federation Far Rim Mining became the premier component of what remained of Rimward Opportunities – the so-called "Hollow Opportunities". It maintained relations with the Rimward Federation, supplying the nascent polity with resources and materials.
The Tinacu Pell was a 10-000 dTon ore-hauler belonging to Far Rim that was lost somewhere within the Liradi Trace in 5326AD. The ship was reputedly carrying thousands of tons of refined precious metals, rare earth metals and other extremely valuable resources. The loss of the vessel and its cargo was a crippling financial blow to Far Rim and hastened its collapse as an organisation. As far as is known the vessel has never been found and remains as a potent lure for adventurers and treasure-hunters.
In 5341AD the class A starport at Sal Marda – the only class A port under Far Rim control – was destroyed, almost certainly as a result of terrorist activity, most likely a group that had suffered as a result of Far Rim's ongoing persecution of "undesirables" within its territory. With no internal ability to construct or maintain starships, and following close on the loss of the Tinacu Pell, Far Rim Mining folded as an entity
