Duunkhan has both an unbreathably thin atmosphere and a lack of surface water making habitation by sophonts difficult. The system has a population between 10,000 and 10 million, lacking the industrial base to be completely self-supporting. Government control of this world is by an external military force. It is a member of Third Imperium in the Kuriishe Subsector of Dagudashaag Sector and in the Domain of Vland. Duunkhan, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estate of an Imperial knight, a member of the Imperial Nobility charged with overseeing the world. This world contains an Imperial Scout Base, capable of handling Scout Service starships and personnel. During the Long Night this world was named Uudnar.
Astrography and planetology[edit]
Duunkhan is a member of the Sylean Main.
Duunkhan lies within the nominal habitable zone of the primary F-class main sequence star - prime real estate for most stellar systems - it is too small to maintain a dense atmosphere. Tectonic activity is virtually nil, and the world is locked into a static, lifeless ice age. Polar caps cover one third of the surface with thin ice sheets, and a thick, sticky, clay-like material that reaches depths of up to a kilometre over the planetary surface, thick fungal growth covers the rest of the surface. The very thin atmosphere has been partly boosted with the application of oxygen-producing algae in a half-hearted attempt at terraforming, but following a partial withdrawal of capital from the project, the atmospheric processors - brought in at vast expense by the Alberich Mining Corporation (AMC) - now lie abandoned and useless around the planetary surface.

History and background[edit]
Just over half a million shareholder/prospectors of the Alberich Mining Corporation (AMC) of Eraki (Dagudashaag 2920) inhabit the world of Duunkhan. The planet is offcially listed as a colony as this corporation wholly owns it. This purchase was made from the late Sector Duke in 1081, following the finding of widely scattered, lanthanum-rich mineral nodules lying just under the clay-like surface of the world.
Since this time, the AMC have attempted to turn a profit in the difficult conditions that abound here; although it must be said that the Eraki stock exchange commonly uses the phrase 'as likely as cash from Duunkhan' to mean a long term, slim or hopeless chance.
Mining occurs at over a thousand sites dotted all over Duunkhan, usually in the form of vast open cast trenches and pits, many of which are large enough to be seen from orbit.
