Caledonian Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) serve as centers of Caledonian navy scouting and reconnaissance activity outside of Caledonian starspace. They are destinations for convoys from foreign states, assembly points for convoys into pirate-infested territory, and above all, logistic staging points for major Caledonian fleet movements outside the Principality. They are the Principality's first line of defense.

The following systems have overt or semi-covert RCN Forward Operating Bases (FOBs):

Spinward Station - Headquarters Caithness[edit]

  • Rhys - A component of the Spinward Station (Caithness), FOB Rhys is a key listening post against Reaver and Aslan expansion out of the Hryaroaa Subsector, as well as an refueling point for convoys traversing between Aslan and Caledonian space.
  • Dunmarrow - FOB Dunmarrow keeps contact with Aslan forces, as well as maintaining the rimward cordon against the Khanate and protecting shipping to and from the trading base located here.
  • Pulou - FOB Pulou is the key coreward watchpost against the Khanate.
  • Gofannon - FOB Gofannon is a new FOB, protecting trade routes and exploration to spin-coreward.

Driftward Station - Headquarters Victory[edit]

  • Skye - FOB Skye is a forward staging area for trade and commerce protection between the Principality and the Imperium. As the Imperium decays, the workload at this FOB increases.

Coreward Station - Headquarters Cuillin[edit]

  • Tsanesi - a larger FOB, FOB Tsanesi oversees scouting and law and order in the fractious systems to coreward of the Principality.
  • Iron Angel - FOB Iron Angel watches the anarchic region to core-driftward of the Principality
  • Lhshami - FOB Lhshami keeps tabs on Imperial activities to core-driftward.

Rimward Station - Headquarters Douglass[edit]

  • Dakaar - FOB Dakaar watches the fluid, tense space between the decaying Imperium, the underdog ally Duncinae and the ever-more-unstable Carillan Assembly.
  • Mulkins -FOB Mulkins is a key contact point with the Confederacy of Duncinae, which is under constant threat from Marlheim and the Carrillan Assembly. FOB Mulkins has been recently expanded.
  • Shamas - Units assigned to FOB Shamas is hotly engaged against bandits, privateers and reavers in the gap between the Principality and the Aslan Hierate. Shamas is also a key waypoint connecting Gaajpaadje to the Principality.
  • Gaajpaadje - FOB Gaajpaadje's primary job is to observe the aggressive expansion of the Grand Duchy of Marlheim. This FOB has also been recently reinforced.

FOBs frequently double as hubs for with RCES activity. Often several small RCES outposts will use a FOB as a hub, supporting their own forward operations.

Organization[edit]

While every FOB is different, they tend to be organized as follows:

  • 1 Light Carrier
  • 4 Light Frigates
  • 16 Sloops
  • 4 AOR-L Replenishment vessels
  • Eight "Dispatch Boats" - communications packets
  • 6 Station Tankers
  • Roughly 20 smaller auxiliaries - repair, cargo and depot ships of various types.

Several - Gaajpaadje, Tsanesi and Mulkins, currently - are reinforced with four extra Light Frigates, an extra squadron of eight additional "Dispatch Boats" for communications, and a larger allotment of tankers and other auxiliaries to support potential movements by much larger fleets from home space.

Note that rarely are all of a FOB's ships on station at a given time; generally 15-25% of the vessels on a FOB are detached for refits and overhauls at a Caledonian shipyard. Half of the AOR-L class ships, and at least half of the smaller auxiliaries, will be rotating back to the Principality to pick up fresh supplies at any given time (usually escorted by a sloop, or more if tensions are running high).

The carrier and station tankers, however, always rotate with vessels in Caledon.
