The star Alcyone (otherwise known as 25 Tauri or Eta Tauri) is a multiple star system of many components, the largest of which is a B7 type giant star. There are also a number of fainter stars that are located very close to Alcyone, all of which are likely members of the same cluster.
Description (Specifications)[edit]
Alcyone is a multiple star system of significant size. It is a triple star orbited by 3 additional stars, one of which is itself a double star.
- The primary star Alcyone A is itself a triple star system. The central star of Alcyone A (Alcyone A1) is a blue-white B7 IIIe type star that has a high rotational velocity (~ 149 km/s), which has created an orbiting gaseous disk around the star's equator.
- The closest companion (Alcyone A2) has a very low mass and orbits very close to the primary, with a likely orbital period of just over four days.
- The second companion (Alcyone A3) is about half the mass of Alcyone A1 and lies at a distance of about 5 AU, orbiting Alcyone A1 in about 830 days.
- Alcyone B (also known as 24 Tauri) is a blue-white A0 V type main sequence star.
- Alcyone C (also known as V647 Tauri) is a bluish-white A7 V type Delta Scuti variable star.
- Alcyone D is itself a double star composed of a pair of white F3 V type main sequence stars.
The Alcyone star system lies approximately 123.6pc from Terra, and is located in a Rimspinward/Spinward direction from Terra at bearing 166.7o Galactic Longitude and -23.5o South Galactic Latitude.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Despite the similarity in name, Alcyone is NOT the primary star of the world Alcyone/Delos (Neworld 1023), which orbits a G8 V main sequence star near the actual location of the astronomical Alcyone.
