The Addaxur of Addax (Tienspevnekr 2214) are a Minor Non-Human Race with a non-humanoid appearance, and are technologically advanced sophonts. They are found in Zhodani Space.

Description (Specifications)

The Addaxur are an intelligent minor race of six-legged carnivores from a high gravity world 40 parsecs from Zhdant (Zhdant 2719).

Addaxur are naturally amphibious, at home underwater and on land. Their primary senses are smell and sophisticated underwater sonar. The early Addaxur lived primarily in the ocean surrounding their planet's many volcanic islands, but ventured ashore to feed and reproduce, in safety from large aquatic predators. The Addaxur sonar sense detected tectonic disturbances beneath the ocean floor, which in pre-history were explained as voices of "the Deep Ones" -- a supposed race of giants living at the bottom of the deep oceans.

Addaxur have no distinct head; their brain is inside the torso, well protected from predators. That said, their mouth and their visual, auditory and olfactory senses are located at the front.

Social Organization

Addaxur hierarchies are charisma-based, like Vargr; however, in stark contrast to the aggressive pursuit of status in Vargr communities, Addaxur prefer to blend in and are pushed to take leadership positions by others. Addaxur take the responsibility of selecting leaders from the pack very seriously. They are quite content to be the "second race" of the Zhodani Consulate, feeling no need to assert themselves.

Packs can grow quite sizable, and occasionally families (and groups of families) move from one pack to another, or form a new one. Whilst little is known as to the cause of these shifts, a new pack must not be dependent on another, but must be self-sufficient. This means that new Addaxur colonies aren't formed until ample preparations have been made; happily, this is compatible with the Zhodani colonisation model.

History & Background (Dossier)

The Addaxur had established an empire of 37 worlds, with communications maintained by sublight ships, by the time the Zhodani discovered them in -5110. The Zhodani observed the fringes of the empire for about ten years before making open contact in -5120. Carefully planned overtures established friendly relations and reserved 10 of the Addaxur’s 37 worlds for the Addaxur alone without restricting Zhodani expansion.

The Addaxur are very much the "second race" of the Consulate, the most visible of its Non-Human demographics. Some observers have historically confused them with another Zhodani client race, the Clotho.
