The Awakened are self-aware Virus machine intellgences. Some think of them as "infected robots" taken over by the Virus. Others think of them as artifical intelligences.
- The name Awakened is a name provided by the Awakened themselves. Most humans, particularly those outside the areas of the inhabited by the Awakened refer to them by their old name, the Vampires.
Physiology & Environment (Ecology)
The Awakened do not fit all of the definitions for organic and they certainly aren't organic, but they are alive in most senses of the word. Some scientists have taken to calling them mechanimorphic life. At this point in time, there are more questions than answers as to what the Awakened are or how they function.
History & Background (Dossier)
The sophont silicon chips were modified in Core Sector at an Imperial Research Station for ship transponders and systems. The incomplete project was released during Dulinor's attack on Core and went viral. Lucan attempted to destroy their homeworld to avoid replication of the research, but failed and Virus prevailed. The continuing maturity of viral strains birthed the stable Awaken race.
- When the Gushemege Merchantile Guild did the GMG Third Survey of areas under their control, they distinguished between biological societies and machine ones producing two sometimes very different UWPs.
