Gesalt has a population between 10,000 and 10 million sophonts, lacking the industrial base to be completely self-supporting. It is a member of Third Imperium in the Sapphyre Subsector of Dagudashaag Sector and in the Domain of Vland. Gesalt, as a member world of the Third Imperium, holds the estate of an Imperial knight, a member of the Imperial Landed Nobility who acts as an Imperial representative to the world. During the Long Night this world was named Serga.

Native Lifeforms

The oceans are surrounded by high, crater-like mountain ranges causing each to act as separate ecosystems. Most are in the early stages of development and swarm with single cell and early multi-cell organisms. The most important research site is at Ubbo-Sathia where life has not yet formed. This isolated location has remain uncontaminated by development elsewhere and seems to be about to undergo evolution independently. The high volcanic activity in the region coupled with the high mineral content seems to be producing unstable chemicals forming into nucleic and amino acids, the basic elements of life. Visitors to Ubbo-Sathia are restricted to sealed containment suits to prevent contamination of the area.

History and Background

Gesalt is a planet undergoing the initial stages of evolution. It was colonized early in the Third Imperium by researchers from the biology departments of the Free University of Ushra and the University of Medurma. Even today most colonists are directly employed by the Universities or produced educational materials to support their research.
