Description[edit]

A form of fitness exercise/martial art that uses a staff in its movements and poses. There are three speeds - Slow, Middle and Fast - the first is about strength, posture and balance and the last is most often used as a workout exercise.

History and Background[edit]

The art of Khi Aalik was developed on Gase A in the Long Night when the Vilani settlements were vulnerable to raids by Vargr while the protection promised by the central government was always far away and the rules against carrying firearms were rigorously enforced.

Since that time, the forms have become more ritualised and the art has become - for many - just another type of exercise routine. It has spread to many Vilani worlds in the Khouth Subsector (It is rarely seen away from this region) and had something of a resurgence on Khouth after the Vargr incursions following the withdrawal of the Corridor Fleet.

Current practice falls into a number of schools - variously emphasising the slow or fast; the art or the combat skill.

Staves used in this art can be improvised, but often a practitioner will buy a model specific to the school they follow. A carbon-fibre and iron stave from Gase A decorated in gold and dated to -343 sold at auction on Serk for Cr58,000 in 1116.
