Arts and culture manifest themselves in many different ways to the bewildering numbers of sophont species located throughout Charted Space. In addition to the the more conventional arts of music, poetry, literature and sculpture, there are far more exotic art forms available to many sophonts such as the HSL Expression Competitions (visual: gestural art) of the Hivers, gustatory art (smell: olfactory art) of the K'kree, the athletic competitions (physical fitness: bodily movement) of the Terran Olympics, or the lethetic competitions of the Zhodani Psionic Games...

Description (Specifications)

A wise sophont once said that for every sense, there exists an art form. And that saying has never been more true than today. In the Third Imperium of the 1100s, so many kinds of arts flourish that most sophont species don't even possess adequate bodily sensory apparatuses to appreciate them all.

History & Background (Dossier)

The arts and culture have existed since life first arose and began grasping for technology. Art is intimately intertwined with civilization, which is synonymous with sophontdom. Thus art is very much an expression of civilization and technology, the relationship between a sophont species and its environment. Art expresses values, attitudes, and relationships.

Tangible Arts

Tangible arts are those that directly produce artifacts. They include many of the following:

  • Paintings
  • Sculpture
  • TBD

Intangible Arts

The intangible arts do not directly produce artifacts. Many sophonts value these arts enough to somehow try to preserve them in tangible form. They include the following:

  • Literature
  • Music
  • Poetry
  • Psionic artistic expression
  • TBD
