The star Beta Pictoris is a blue-white main sequence star of stellar type A6 and is classified as a Delta Scuti type variable star.

Description (Specifications)

The Beta Pictoris system is a very young star system, although it is already in the main sequence stage of its evolution. It is the principal member of the Beta Pictoris moving group, an association of young stars sharing both the same motion through space and the same age.

  • There is a large disk of dust and gas in orbit about Beta Pictoris, as well as the presence of several planetesimal belts and cometary activity. Some planets have formed within this disk and the processes of planet formation is still ongoing.
  • A Large Gas Giant (once known as Beta Pictoris b to ancient Solomani astronomers) orbits in the plane of the debris disk surrounding the star at a distance of about 9.0 AU.

The Beta Pictoris star system lies approximately 19.4pc from Terra, and is located in a Trailing direction from Terra at bearing 258.4o Galactic Longitude and -30.6o South Galactic Latitude.

History & Background (Dossier)

The star Beta Pictoris is orbited by the world Baytapik/Denebola (Alpha Crucis 0125).
