The Haniiwa are a semi-aquatic race native to Haniiwa (Deneb 1208).

Description (Specifications)[edit]

The Haniiwa are a semi-aquatic species that lives in the surf zone of Haniiwa's various coral islands and reefs. They resemble the Terran Assassin Bug, and they are descended from aquatic predators. The Haniiwa were originally open ocean hunters, before climate change and overhunting forced them to take up "aquaculture", domesticating and raising their favorite food species.

Organized around loose pack structures, they have formed a collective of communities under the control of a representative-style authority.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

When first discovered in the 400s, the species had attained TL–3, aided in part by their successful manufacture of metal implements. Their world was interdicted as per Imperial law and was blissfully unaware of the greater universe.

By 1105 the Haniiwa had advanced to TL–5 and had expanded to around 2,000,000 individuals. They appeared to be signalling to the IISS monitoring satellites and attempting to construct rockets - though they haven't yet managed to get them further than 500m off the ocean surface.

In 1122 the Assemblage of 1116 invaded the world and a guerrilla war resulted. With the declaration of the Fait Accompli of 1132 this turned into a full-fledged war and the Regency had to intervene with the RISS providing peace-keeping patrols.
