canon[edit]

I've long known that Beyond and Vanguard Reaches had been declared non-canonical, but I hadn't heard that they had been re-canonized. How did that happen? I must say that I'm surprised, especially when I read (in the entry for Vanguard Reaches -- it might be a good idea to include the same information in the entry for Beyond) that the two versions were substantially the same ("differ only in surface ways"). ISTR things like matter transportation and self-repair technology that was... inconsistent with other parts of the TU.

So what's the scoop?

The issue has come up because the definition of canonical used by the editors (i.e. me) has evolved somewhat over time. I believe the current defintion of canon is correct. My original definition of Canon was very inclusive (anything published as approved For Traveller, by GDW or a licencee) and at odds with Marc defintion. As time has gone by and as questions like this have arisin, the defintion has moved closer to Marc's. The next challenge is, there are now an unknown number of articles incorrectly marked. So rather than go through the 1817 canon articles to see which needed updating the unstated rule has been, if you are updating an article and the canon/non-canon is wrong (or other categories), you should update it to be correct. copyright[edit]

Since this has been released to the Galactic domain, does this mean that we are allowed to essentially reproduce the material in full here? --RASN Lt. Cmdr. Reijerink 11:20, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Essentially no. Chuck Kallenbach released Beyond and Vanguard Reaches for use in Galactic, but not into public domain. Practically, much of the stuff is here, partly because of the Mike Maley's High Tortuga website. If you want to track him down and ask him, that would be most excellent. Sounds like a project. --RASN Lt. Cmdr. Reijerink 03:33, 17 September 2008 (UTC)
