Syzlin Republic Fleet (Military) Synopsis[edit]

The primary naval force of the Syzlin Republic.

This is predominately a cruiser navy without large capital ships of the line.

Mission[edit]

System defense formations patrol the Syzlin home systems and protect against pirate attacks. The cruisers prowl the borders to keep enemy governments at bay. Quick counter attacks and raids are launched in response to any unauthorized border violations. The cruisers look for commerce raiding opportunities when available to supplement their operational budgets and weak support and resupply capabilities.

Description[edit]

The limits placed upon their capabilities by the lack of advanced native ship building facilities has inspired them to look farther afield to acquire ships. They have investigated buying second-hand, obsolete ships from more advanced navies that they can refit and reuse.

History & Background (Dossier)[edit]

Their operational history is devoid of the large glorious battles that results in all those ribbons and medals in other navies. Instead small brutal skirmishes have decided their fate devoid of parades or notations in the annals of history.

Strategy & Doctrine (Operations)[edit]

They seek first to locate and contain enemy forces. They probe for weaknesses while gathering strength. Once allied forces are collected they seek to deprive enemy formations of logistic support and supply convoys. They seek to avoid engaging enemy strength, looking to sap the foe's will to fight by drawing conflicts out and stalling for time. They love the use of decoys and deception. One lone scout commander honored in their tactical seminars at the naval college, once managed to lure an entire enemy destroyer squadron astray. He used electronic signal deception, and "accidentally" allowed secret transmissions of enemy fleet location to be detected. The enemy unit was dispatched from the main fleet to investigate. When they arrived in the target system the trap was sprung. The unit was destroyed piecemeal over several months, deprived of refueling when the Syzlin scout had noticed that this particular class of deadly enemy craft lacked the ability to scoop and refine their own fuel. They were endlessly harassed with long range nuclear missile fire. Irradiated and unable to refuel and jump free or get a messenger back to the main body the entire group was eventually destroyed by that system's defensive assets.

Tables of Organization & Equipment (Organizational Structure)[edit]

Ship designs are detailed below.

The Syzlin Republic maintains three fleets, each centered on a command cruiser. The Home Fleet defends the cluster around Syzlin itself and acts as a strategic reserve. The Rim Fleet operates out of Stefen and defends the four worlds of that cluster, while the Ranger Fleet operates from Ise, and along the scattered coreward-trailing worlds of the Republic. A fourth command cruiser serves as a presidential yacht and centerpiece of the Bodyguard Squadron.

Representative Examples & Classes[edit]

The Syzlin Republic has 23,000 tons of TL–12 ships in the fleet.

(1) Republic Class Light Cruiser

This class features the best meson spinal mounted gun available, and a power plant large enough to power it. With modest 2G acceleration, no agility and only jump 2 range it has limited strategic and tactical mobility. Defense is limited to a battery of ten triple sand caster turrets and a repulsor bay. Offensively there are thirty triple beam laser turrets organized into three batteries, a fusion gun bay and particle accelerator bay. Five missile bays round out the offensive compliment. The fusion gun and lasers are often called into a defensive role against enemy missile barrages, as the hull is unarmored and unable to absorb hits. Also absent are even rudimentary meson or nuclear shielding.

(1) X-Ray Class Destroyer

Assigned to travel with the light cruiser, this little brother has some interesting attributes. It has jump 3 and 6 Gs of acceleration. It is lightly armored and has screens. It has six triple sand caster turrets, four triple beam laser turrets, a particle accelerator bay and a missile bay.

Stefen (Crucis Margin 1135 (A5478A9-B)) provides 840,000 tons of TL–11 ships for the fleet.

(8) Hotel Class Heavy Cruisers

This CruRon forms the main line of battle. They have jump 2 and 6 Gs acceleration. By local standards they are considered fast and nimble for their size. They carry a heavy particle accelerator spinal mounted gun and 700 triple missile turrets. Fifty triple sand caster turrets, a repulsor bay, twenty triple beam laser turrets and ten fusion gun bays are fitted into the armored, partially streamlined close configuration hull. Marine platoons are carried with drop capsules for orbital assaults and five ship's boats provide the marines with close support, and dust off.

(4) Romeo Class Light Cruisers Designed to carry as much of the features and fire power of the heavy cruiser in a hull one third the size. It retains jump 2 range but the maneuver drive can only manage 3 G's acceleration and is less agile. The fuel purification system was removed for room. It carries fewer marines and away boats. The armor and defenses are essentially unchanged. The main offensive armament is the same as its larger cousin. Instead of hundreds of triple missile turrets it opts for ten massive missile bays, less numerous but harder hitting and more powerful.

Embu (Crucis Margin 1130 (B844776-A)) has 8,000 tons of SDBs

(4) Tango Class System Defense Boats

Fast, and agile at 6Gs acceleration these are equipped with individual staterooms for the crew, a rare luxury for extended duty crew comfort. Their heavily armored, streamlined needle/wedge hull allows them to hide in the deep atmospheres of gas giants, amid cometary debris and under water with equal faculty. They carry a squad of drop troops and have enough low berths for a frozen watch. A pair of 100ton missile bays provide their firepower.

(2) Carbide Class System Defense Asteroid Monitors

Unknown to most, these little rocks are bait. Armored to an insane level these diminutive battle stations orbit as quiet sentinels. Their three triple missile launchers are a nuisance at best to most warships. Even with nuclear warheads they are unlikely to hit modern, armored and shielded warships. Their role instead, is to lure combatants to within range of far larger spinal mounted meson guns, buried deep in their assigned moons. Once they draw the unsuspecting prey within range for a presumed easy kill the shore batteries open up and cripple the aggressors. This duty is not for the faint of heart. Only a selfless few are selected to serve aboard these craft.

(5) Whiskey Class Light Fighters 10 ton each. This tiny squadron likes to hide amid the asteroids and pounce when small fry targets present themselves. They have a small stateroom with extended life support capacity to allow them to conduct deep space, long range, system wide patrols. They can also stand picket duty at the cusp of the gravity well to intercept ships jumping in and out of the system. They like to fly in low orbit in a patriotic formation to reassure visiting merchant captains that all is well. Lightly armored and missile armed, they are none the less, fast, agile, sleek, streamlined and fun to fly.

(2) 100 ton scout couriers stand by fueled and ready to jump away at the first sign of invaders. They are charged with delivering messages between fleet formations. During less hectic times they conduct search and rescue drills for troubled space craft in need of assistance.
