The Imperial Navy will occasionally ensure that it has access to the experience of particularly experienced personnel (after they have retired, or been discharged) by paying a monthly stipend in exchange for that person's being available to give their professional advice or services on short notice.

Individuals on Retainer remain under the Imperial Code of Military Justice. They must inform the Imperial Navy of their whereabouts and, leave details of how they may be contacted in-case they should be required.
