The star Rigel (otherwise known as Beta Orionis) is a quinary star system whose principal component (Rigel A) is a blue supergiant star of spectral type B8 Iae classified as an Alpha Cygni type variable star.
- It is an outlying member of the Orion OB-1 Association.
Description (Specifications)[edit]
Rigel is a quinary star system composed of a supergiant primary Rigel A with an orbiting trinary system Rigel BC.
- Rigel A is a blue supergiant Alpha Cygni type variable star of spectral type B8 Iae.
- Rigel BC is a trinary system composed of two blue B9 V main sequence stars (Rigel Ba and Rigel Bb) in close orbit about one another, accompanied by an additional B9 V companion (Rigel C).
- Rigel BC is separated from from Rigel A by ~2200AU, and Rigel BC has an orbital period of ~18,000 years about Rigel A.
- Rigel B and Rigel C have an orbital period of ~63 years about one another.
- Rigel B is itself a binary system consisting of two B9 V type main sequence stars (Rigel Ba and Rigel Bb) that orbit each other every ~9.86 days.
- There is a class K main sequence dwarf (Rigel D), which also belongs to the system. At a separation of ~11,500AU, Rigel D takes ~250,000 years to orbit the Rigel ABC inner system.
The Rigel star system lies approximately 264.6pc from Terra, and is located in a Rimward direction from Terra at bearing 209.2o Galactic Longitude and -25.2o South Galactic Latitude.
History & Background (Dossier)[edit]
Rigel forms one of the feet of the Terran-sky constellation of Orion, one of the few constellations that is marginally recognizable throughout Charted Space.
