One of the two warring polities in the 1980 game Dark Nebula is the "Aslanic Hierate" with its capital at Kuzu, but no additional details are given in the game rules. The basic nature of the sophont species was first given in the "Contact! Aslan" article in JTAS Issue 7, published in 1981. That article mentions that their homeworld is Kuzu; the homeworld would later be given the alternate name Kusyu and be placed in Dark Nebula Sector in 1984 (in the Atlas of the Imperium and the Aslan Alien Module).

Aslan is the name of the talking lion hero of C.S. Lewis' The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. The words aslan, arslan, and arsalan all mean "lion" in various Turkic languages, and all three are used as both given names and surnames in Turkey and central Asia generally.
