Khoekho is a nonindustrial world, that requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society.

  • In a technological universe, societies without industrial capability generally suffer as nearly all manufactured and high tech goods must be brought in at significant cost.
  • As a nonindustrial world, it requires extensive imports of outside technology to maintain a modern, star-faring society. The need to import most manufactured and high technology goods drives the price of these goods up in the open market.
  • It is a member of the Vargr Extents in the Elkhaghaza Subsector of Knoellighz Sector.

History & Background (Dossier)

Khoekho (Knoellighz 2620) C1406AD-9 De Ni Po of the Democracy of Greats in Elkhaghaza Subsector of Knoellighz Sector is a highly-successful if makeshift crossroads caravanserai welcoming Naval, Privateer, Corsairs and Traders to its sandy oasis. The mainworld lies on the cooler band of the Green Zone of the system and though a Desert, the days are tolerable so long as a sophont remains properly hydrated. Nights on Khoekho require warmer coverings, especially in the early, pre-dawn hours. The yellow-white and hot, F7 V solar primary of Khoekho keeps this Desert World warm but dry. Water must be drawn from very deep wells drilled and augmented with contra-gravity siphoning from the crust. Water is an imported commodity to this bazaar Downport and Startown environment.

The system lacks Gas Giants and planetoid belts which increase the cost of refueling at the C-rated Downport. Fuel is always priced maximum for a C Starport. There is no Highport above Khoekho on purpose. A visitor is purposefully meant to desire to land on the world to take advantage of the markets, second-hand dealers, scavengers and salvaging junk dealers. Many vessels refuel in adjacent systems and make a single parsec jump to Khoekho and do business. The only entities unwelcome on Khoekho are corporations trying to peddle off-the-shelf goods as they stand out like lakes on a dune-covered dustball such as this mainworld. Khoekho is a capitol in favor of Free Traders and small-time merchant convoys.

The main draw to Khoekho for the varied Vargr of the Democracy of Greats is the neutral ground atmosphere of the Startown where just about anything can be bought or sold, especially morally neutral or black market goods. The reason both legitimate and seedier visitors can safely meet on this crossroads world is the very high Law put into place by a Democracy, Former Admiral of this Jump-1 main’s fleet. The Admiral retired and collected investors who felt an overwhelming Charisma from him. With the startup funds, a central location with minimal colonization draw, the Admiral and his investors founded an interstellar caravanserai set over the planet’s largest collection of underground water. About two million Vargr live and work at the Downport, Startown and rural water-drilling well operations. Hotels and other lodgings are scattered and small or medium in capacity, being family or pack owned.

In a respected and retired status, the mainworld’s Charismatic Dictator was also business savvy enough to market and advertise the desert bazaar to the interstellar main. In order to provide a safe marketplace, he used Starport fees, taxes and investor funds to hire a paramilitary militia of loyal Army and Marine retirees to staff a professional militia firm-for-hire. The incorporated firm then hired out to adjacent systems so successful on Khoekho were they. Weapons other than in the hands of the local militia are forbidden and there is no extraterritoriality at the Downport. In contrast, the bazaar can feature many items most worlds proscribe. If a good is dangerous, like a weapon or weaponized substance, it must be packaged in a secured container and is subject to inspection upon arrival or loading into a docked vessel. The high Law Level of D is stifling at first to crews but is balanced by the hustle and excited free trading at the Startown marketplace.

Nestled among the main’s five Naval Bases and three Corsair Bases, (one is a Privateer Base with a Hunters’ Bawn Letter of Marque from the Democracy of Greats), this world offers temporary sanctuary to legitimate and questionable trade so long as buyers and sellers obey local law enforcement, conduct trade peacefully and leave quickly with their profits or purchases. The Naval elements turn a lax eye from the moment they jump in-system until they take leave to reach 100 Diameters. Given the numerous armed vessels in Khoekho space, piracy is lackluster inside minimum jump distance.

One tale of a Corsair that conducted piracy in Khoekho system and attempted escape by catastrophic jump destruction from inside 100 Diameters from the mainworld is repeatedly played at the Security Kiosk at the Downport terminal. From Khoekho outbound, regular polity interstellar law is once again upheld. The Charismatic Greats of the Democracy of Greats tolerate this world’s nature due to the high Law and Governance by a Former Admiral locals designate as ‘Sheikh’. The mobile, Charismatic Great officiating from Adhaeoe (Knoellighz 2517) visits annually to check in with the Sheikh as a matter of professional courtesy.
