A Medical Scanner is a highly sensitive instrument designed to intrepret various life signs in a sophont.

A doctor or nurse places a small disk shaped probe against the patients chest. In five to ten seconds, the scanner accurately determines body temperature, blood pressure, pulse rate, resperation rate, level of neural activity, and fluid balance. While medical training is not required to use the device, it does require some skill to interpret the readings.

Once a reading is made, pressing a button on the device records values for later review. Setpoints can also be keyed in, so that if readings reach a certain level, the scanners to alert the attending physician.

It is also possible to attach the scanner to a computer terminal, to allow the computer to recommend diagnosis and treatment options.
