Basic Ship Characteristics
Following the Imperial Navy and IISS Universal Ship Profile and data, additional information is presented in the format shown here. The small craft factor indicates the number of squadrons (of ten craft) carried on the ship. Tonnage on the universal ship profile is shown in kilotons (thousands of tons) where necessary.

Expanded Template

A version of Maksim's excellent template with a number of additional and expanded data fields - care must be taken to delete superfluous data from the table or it'll cause issues with the end result. If your ship doesn't have the described feature (perhaps no cargo ramp, or no ECM) then prune or delete the data until you're happy with it. It may also be necessary to pluralise (or perhaps de-pluralise) data entries (1 dual plasma gun turret versus 10 dual plasma gun turrets, for example). Best advice, apply grammatical common sense and aim for "readable".

Notes

  • Remember, Control Z (undo) is your friend while editing. It allows you to backtrack thru changes made during the current editing session
    • Control Y (restore) is also available. It allows you to immediately reverse an "undo" (Control Z) you have done. Just in case.
  • Unnecessary data preceded by a | (vertical bar) MUST be deleted if its not being incorporated. The vertical bars are part of the structure of the table and if extra ones are left in, they add spurious extra right-hand cells to the table. Looks really bad.
    • The reverse is also true, don't go taking out stuff that is necessary to make the table work.
  • Double square brackets denote a link within the data, as normal.
  • A single square bracket [ and ] around data further serves to highlight areas where choices must be made and superfluous data must be deleted. Make sure the single square brackets are also removed.
  • "XXXX" and similar denotes "fill in the appropriate name or number here".
  • Some of the additional data is pure fluff. If it doesn't appeal, change it or get rid of it - the template is a structure to help frame your imagination, not a straightjacket for it. Bottom line, you've got to be happy with the end result.

Some sections (subcraft and hangers, but particularly weapons) can be a little confusing. With care and a bit of judicious copying and pasting it should work. Aim to keep it as concise as possible, delete all the surplus notes and --- lines and stuff and it'll be fine.

Things like hanger space have been added because their characteristics are relatively easy to extrapolate from designs, and these very specific areas of vessels are often the focus of intense player activity. Y'know, dodgy cargoes getting quarantined, boarding actions, special habitats for visiting alien entities, workshop space, permanent conversion to other uses, trying to jam in extra vehicles, that sort of thing. I'm going to keep tinkering with the format until I've covered most bases.
  • Specific details regarding things like the hangers are entirely optional and can be ignored if preferred.

Of course, this version of the template won't be to everyone's taste. But hopefully it provides both inspiration and offers a degree of help implementing additional detail onto a ship design.

Examples

A picture is worth a thousand words and all that.

Three examples of ships that have been detailed using the expanded data are provided for inspiration and guidance.

Check the Discussion Pages for these three vessels to see the templates used to create them. These are provided to give insight into how the table is structured and how the data within it has been edited, changed and generally mucked around with.

Modifiable Template

Replace Maksim's table element with the one provided below. Remove or modify data as necessary (please see Notes, above). Maksim's table structure is definitive and should be taken as the baseline: all designs should adhere to its structure.

| Tonnage
| The XXXX class is constructed using a XXX Ton hull built in a XXXX configuration. [The hull is unstreamlined and cannot operate in anything denser than Trace atmospheres without risking catastrophic structural failure.] [The hull is partially streamlined, giving a relatively limited atmospheric performance that is reliant on its onboard gravitic systems.] [The hull is fully streamlined, giving [fair good excellent] atmospheric performance that is further enhanced by its onboard gravitic systems.]
* [*Delete Me Note: for Dispersed Structure configuration vessels*] The vessel [is constructed around a long central spine.] [is constructed around a central hub.] [has a modular construction.] [is constructed in an arbitrary fashion.]
* There are XX airlocks located around the vessel. The cargo hold is accessed by [a hatch] [large doors] [and has a loading ramp].
* The configuration of the hull prevents surface landings without the use of a hull cradle to support the vessel.
* The vessel has hardened ventral surfaces, allowing surface landings.
* The vessel has a sturdy [fixed retractable] undercarriage, allowing surface landings.
* The vessel has sturdy [fixed retractable] legs, allowing surface landings.
|-
| 2.

Accessible areas of the hull are fitted with grav plates and inertial compensators and have full life support and environmental systems.
* There are internal monitoring and security systems throughout the vessel. Individual sections of the hull can be sealed off.
* There is an emergency locker.
* There are multiple emergency lockers.
|-
| 3.
| Performance
| The vessel mounts a Jump-X drive, a Maneuver-X drive, and a Power Plant-X, giving performance of Jump-X and X-G acceleration. The ship has an agility rating of X [and an emergency agility of X]. The internal fuel tankage is sufficient for [one] [two three consecutive] Jump-X and giving the power plant X weeks duration.
* The engineering section is controlled [from the bridge.] [by the pilot.] [Access to the machinery can be gained via a sealable hatch.] [The machinery is not accessible.]]
* The engineering section has a main control room.
** Ladders, gantries and platforms give access to the machinery.
[* The jump drive utilizes a lanthanum hull grid.]
[* The jump drive creates a jump bubble around the vessel.]
* The jump drive is fitted with a jump governor.
|-
| 4.
| Electronics
| Adjacent to the [small craft bridge] bridge is a computer model/XXX: [no backup computer is installed.] [the vessel has a backup computer model/XXX.]
