Caledonian Army units are organized into several levels.

==Brigade Types==
+
'''Brigades''' are primarily infantry; they exist primarily to hold ground and support other units on the offensive.
The Caledonian Army's primary self-sustaining maneuver element is the Brigade.  On larger systems (and in the [[Intervention Force (Caledonian Military) | Intervention Force]], 3-7 Brigades will be formed into "Corps", with a Brigade-sized Corps headquarters "Group".

===Grav/Mech Brigade (TL 11/12)===
+
'''Divisions''' are combined-arms units, larger than Brigades (and, unlike many of the world's Armies, not ''composed of'' brigades''), capable of extended independent action.
Although the technology advanced between Tech Levels 11 and 12, the organization of Caledonian Grav/Mech units stayed the same.  The adoption of "Gravity Combat Vehicles" combining the "Tank" and "Infantry Carrier" roles led to the collapsing of both unit types into a single unit.

Grav/Mech Brigades consist of:

* 3 x '''Grav/Mech Battalions''' - these are explained below.

* 1 x '''Fire Support Battalion''' - Explained below.  The "batteries" of the Fire Support Battalion are generally attached to the Grav/Mech battalions on operations.

* 1 x '''Headquarters Battalion''', consisting of...:

** 1 x '''Recon Squadron''' - 13 x Gravity Reconaissance Vehicles

** 1 x '''Engineer Company''' - 16 x gravitic Combat Engineering Vehicles ( 4x demolition, 4 x mine/trap detection/clearance, 8 x construction vehicles)

** 1 x '''Damper Company''' - Mobile nuclear dampers

** 1 x '''Headquarters Company''' - 6 x Headquarters Vehicles, 4 x Gravitic Recon Vehicles (security)

* 1 x '''Support Battalion''', consisting of...:

** 1 x '''Logistics Company''' - 2x water purification/storage vehicles, 16 x transport sleds.

** 1 x '''Transport Company''' 5 x groups of 6 x armored supply transport grav sleds (for transporting supplies from Logistics to the maneuver battalions)

** 1 x '''Maintenance Company''' - Mobile repair platoons for grav vehicles, ordnance and electronics.

** 1 x '''Medical Company''' - Gravmobile Field Hospital.

** 1 x '''Signals Company''' - Mobile data networking unit

===Light Infantry Brigade (TL 9-12)===
+
'''Corps''' are groupings of brigades and divisions.
Again - while the technology advanced greatly between TL9 and TL12, the organization of the light ("Leg") infantry unit changed very little, except for the vehicle (if any) that transported them into battle; at TL9 it may have been trucks, helicopters or crude gravity sleds; at higher levels, it was more-advanced gravitic transports.
+
* A "Mechanized Corps" is 2-4 Divisions (and occasional attached Infantry Brigades in support) plus supporting troops, as noted below.
The light infantry brigade consists of:
+
* A "Corps" (without any modifiers) is a group of 2-6 Brigades, generally intended to defend a geographic area.
* 3 x '''Rifle Battalions''' - these are explained below.

* 1 x '''Headquarters Battalion''', consisting of...:

** 1 x '''Recon Company''' - 72 men, with light transport according to their tech level (TL9: light vehicles or helicopters; TL12, light grav sleds).

** 1 x '''Damper Company''' - Mobile nuclear dampers

** 1 x '''Headquarters Company''' - 6 x Headquarters Vehicles, 4 x Gravitic Recon Vehicles (security)

* 1 x '''Support Battalion''', consisting of...:

** 1 x '''Logistics Company''' - 1 x water purification vehicle (plus storage systems), 8 x transport sleds.

** 1 x '''Transport Company''' 4 x groups of 6 x supply transport vehicles per tech level (for transporting supplies from Logistics to the maneuver battalions)

** 1 x '''Maintenance Company''' - Mobile repair platoons for ordnance and electronics.

** 1 x '''Medical Company''' - Gravmobile Field Hospital.

** 1 x '''Signals Company''' - Mobile data networking unit

Plus transport units (@ tech level) attached from other echelons.

Revision as of 00:07, 2 December 2014

Caledonian Army units are organized into several levels.

Brigades are primarily infantry; they exist primarily to hold ground and support other units on the offensive.

Divisions are combined-arms units, larger than Brigades (and, unlike many of the world's Armies, not composed of brigades), capable of extended independent action.

Corps are groupings of brigades and divisions.

  • A "Mechanized Corps" is 2-4 Divisions (and occasional attached Infantry Brigades in support) plus supporting troops, as noted below.
  • A "Corps" (without any modifiers) is a group of 2-6 Brigades, generally intended to defend a geographic area.

A Field Force is a unit of 2-5 Corps (Mechanized or regular) plus supporting troops as noted below. Field Forces undertake major operations, or defend large areas of territory.

Brigades

A Caledonian Brigade - it's not necessary to call it an "infantry" brigade - is organized the same at any tech level. Their mode of transportation will vary according to the tech level (as noted below).

  • 3 x Rifle Battalions - these are explained below.
  • 1 x Headquarters Battalion, consisting of...:
    • 1 x Recon Company - 72 men, with light transport according to their tech level (TL9: light vehicles or helicopters; TL12, light grav sleds).
    • 1 x Damper Company - Mobile nuclear dampers (only TL12 brigades)
    • 1 x Headquarters Company - 6 x Headquarters Vehicles, 4 x Gravitic Recon Vehicles (security)
  • 1 x Support Battalion, consisting of...:
    • ** 1 x Logistics Company - 1 x water purification vehicle (plus storage systems), 8 x transport sleds.
    • 1 x Transport Company 4 x groups of 6 x supply transport vehicles per tech level (for transporting supplies from Logistics to the maneuver battalions)
    • 1 x Maintenance Company - Mobile repair platoons for ordnance and electronics.
    • 1 x Medical Company - Gravmobile Field Hospital.
    • 1 x Signals Company - Mobile data networking unit
  • 1 x Close Fire Support Battalion

Plus transport units (at appropriate tech level) attached from other echelons

Mobility

Caledonian infantry units will use different means of transportation depending on their tech level and role.

  • TL9 - Truck/ATV, APC, Helicopter, Leg
  • TL10 - G-Carrier (light), APC, Leg
  • TL11 - G-Carrier (Armored or light), Leg
  • TL12 - G-Carrier (Stealth/Armored), Leg

Divisions

Caledonian Divisions are larger than brigades, and more capable of extended independent offensive operations.

Their five maneuver battalions are almost always organized into combined arms "battlegroups" - one based on each of the five maneuver (Heavy/Light) Battalion HQs - mixing Grav, Infantry, Fire Support, Recon and Engineer elements into mobile strike forces.

  • 2 x Heavy Battalions - explained below.
  • 3 x Light Battalions - explained below.
  • 1 x Close Fire Support Battalion - Explained below
  • 1 x General Fire Support Battalion - Explained below
  • 1 x Recon Battalion:
    • 5 x Close Recon Squadrons each with 14 Wallace Gravitic Recon Vehicles (one squadron normally attached to each maneuver battalion/Battlegroup.
    • 1 x Long Range Scout Company
  • Logistics Battalion, with:
    • Medical Company
    • Maintenance Company
    • Supply Company
    • Close Support Company
      • 5 x transport teams @ 12 G-Carriers; supply-movers, assigned one team to each Battalion/Battlegroup.
  • Engineer Battalion -
    • Construction Company
    • 5 x Combat Engineer Companies
  • Headquarters Battalion
    • Staff Section
    • Intelligence Section
    • Operations Section
    • Signals Company
    • Military Police Company

"Battlegroups"

Battlegroups are ad hoc combined arms teams based on one of the maneuver (Grav or Infantry) Battalion headquarters. They are flexible and organized at the discretion of the Division Commander, a two-star general.

A typical sample Battlegroup based on a TL-12 Grav Mech battalion may include the following:

  • Grav Battalion headquarters Battalion
  • Close support logistics team from the Logistics Battalion
  • Close Recon squadron from the Recon Battalion
  • Two "Heavy" companies of Chieftain Grav Combat Vehicles
  • A "Light" company of infantry in G-Carriers
  • A fire support batteries from the Fire Support battalions.
  • Forward observers from both the close and general fire support battalions.

Corps

A Mechanized Corps is 2-4 Divisions (as noted above), occasionally with Brigades added for additional support and security.

A Corps is 2-6 Brigades of infantry.

Corps are generally assigned to large, extended operations.

Corps headquarters include the following support troops:

  • 2 x General Fire Support battalions
  • Corps Logistics Battalion - This serves as the supply "warehouse" for the various constituent divisions and brigades, and
  • Intelligence Battalion
    • Electronic Intel Company - intercept and cryptography
    • Humint Company (Liaison with battalion, brigade and division recon units)
    • Long Range Scout Company
    • Analysis Company
  • "Cavalry" Battalion - 3 x squadrons of 14 x Reconnaissance Vehicles (at associated tech level).
  • Headquarters Battalion
  • Signals Battalion (mobile data networking)
  • Military Police Battalion
  • Medical Battalion
  • Construction Engineer Battalion

Field Forces

Field Forces are large groups of multiple (3-8) Corps, generally responsible for large geographical areas.

Field Force headquarters include the following support troops:

  • 3 x General Fire Support battalions
  • Field Force Logistics Group:
    • "Warehouse" Battalion
    • Maintenance Battalion
    • Ordnance (heavy weapons repair) Battalion
    • Fusion Battalion (fusion plant maintenance)
  • Headquarters Battalion
  • Signals Group (mobile data networking)
    • Multiple comms battalions
  • Military Police Battalion
  • Medical Battalion (generally one or more general and evacuation hospitals)

Battalion Organizations

There are several fairly standard battalion organizations found througout the Caledonian Army. Their equipment varies by tech level, but the organization stays largely the same (except as noted below).
