It is strongly suspected that Imperial interests were behind this upheaval, as the Imperium benefited greatly from the removal of the strong pro-Zhodani government and the consequent weakness of this flank of the Consulate during the Third Frontier War.
Regardless of the cause of the Dominion's disintegration, the result of the crisis was a considerable diminuation of the size and power of Altnzar. A number of star systems which rebelled at this time later emerged as the nucleus of the League of Suns.
