The star Achernar (also spelled Achenar and otherwise known as Alpha Eridani) is a binary system composed of a hot blue main sequence star of spectral classification B6 orbited by a smaller blue-white main sequence star of spectral type A.

Description (Specifications)

  • Achernar A has an unusually rapid rotational velocity, causing it to become oblate in shape. It is one of the least spherical stars in Galaxias.
  • Achernar B orbits Achernar A at a distance of 12.3AU with an orbital period of about 14.5 years.

The Achernar star system lies approximately 42.8pc from Terra, and is located in a Rimtrailing/Trailing direction from Terra at bearing 290.8o Galactic Longitude and -58.8o South Galactic Latitude.

History & Background (Dossier)

Despite the similarity in name, Achernar is NOT the primary star of the world Archernar/Orichalc (Alpha Crucis 0719), which orbits a yellow-white giant star of classification G4 III.

  • Achernar may or may not have lent its name to the slightly differently spelled world of Archernar which lies in the same sector.
