Welcome (2024)[edit]

Hi, welcome to Traveller!

Please leave a message on my talk page if I can help with anything.

Recent Changes[edit]

The Wiki is an evolving thing. The older format you mentioned is a bit dated and doesn't really allow for changes or editing, which is occasionally necessary as new products become available (or because updates to stuff like Traveller Map occur). The older format is a bit scruffy and can be rather off-putting to newer players - lots of numbers and not much information about them: because the Wiki is very much the "front end" of Trav, what folks go to when they click on the world link in Trav Map, it's become increasingly apparent that a neater and more engaging presentation is required.

Worth mentioning, the Wiki is not intended to be a replacement for books, which is why the included information is actually quite limited - folks can check the references and sources to see where it came from, purchase the books, get a ton more background and details, and in so doing keep the game healthy and ticking along.

Thomas (the Boss) and myself have developed the newer layout to include as much information as possible - most of it is pretty generic tbh, really doing little more than expanding out the paragraphs you'd find in the various Traveller books and on Trav Map. Unfortunately the newer and older styles of template are not compatible. That being said tho, moves are afoot to expand out the newer template so that it includes more information in the sidebar (the summarized data really). Can't say when exactly that'll happen, but it should ... at some point.

Thanks for clarifying. It gave me perspective on current situation. I understand the need for new format and I appreciate the work done thus far.
Wiki is not a replacement for books but it is a place where I can find references to publications I was not aware of - just as you mentioned above, wiki is source for references - thus hard to find information or interesting details should be mentioned in the wiki so that I know where to look for further information. Even when that publication is deemed old or outdated, it is still a publication and could give food for thought for own campaign. For example the reference that Caladbolg is deemed to be the HQ for Order of the White Star was interesting for me but it wasn't mentioned in any of the Mongoose 2nd Edition publications I have at hand. Thus wiki was helpful in pointing me towards the right direction. This wiki is powerful and useful tool and I want to contribute what I can.
Based on all of the above, even though old information does look bit scruffy and dated it does still hold as there are those who use Traveller 5 and other variants of Traveller for those these scruffy details are still valid. When taking into account newer publications, the World Builder's Handbook tries to follow the old convention for notation from older publications so that it would be backwards compatible, therefore I think that scruffy looking info should still be available (referencing to World Builder's Handbook for further details and explanation).
I do understand from technical point of view that the current wiki templates are not as dynamic for taking into account possible future changes this is the reason for the need of refining and developing those templates further. I'm not familiar with creating wiki templates but I'm very familiar with software development in general so I'm not asking for quick changes nor want to hurry anyone. I just wish that consideration would be given so that there would be no loss of data and the "scruffy" looking info would be retained in some form.
English isn't my native language so above might seem convoluted or funny. I tried to bring forth what I was thinking.
