Talk:Jump Drive History

Notes (2009)[edit]

Based on Canon and implied in canon information, and some plain old story telling on my part, I cooked up a plausible history for the devlopment of jump drive.

  • The 2 field cylinders, although primitive, are SIMPLE -primitive seen in a nice light- and lend themselves to frontier work where maintence yards are bloody few and far between, and you better maintain and fix it yourself it you want to get home again.
  • As for The physics part, this is a fine mix of deep physics and purest gossamer, stab in the dark educated guesswork and deep reading about physics, experience with energy fields and how they generally behave in The Real World™ and a deep reading of A Step Farther Out, and a life of loving GOOD science fiction.
  • Fields either want to be donuts (polar fields) or spheres (radial fields sich as monopolar charges like an electron or graviton carry).
  • BTW, I have made styrofoam models of both a sphere and 7/3 cylinder ship, and am looking to get a hotwire knife system and a BIG block of foam to carve out a type S scoutship. I got the bug BAD...
