Description / Specifications[edit]

SPBC is a virus commonly found in the Rigel and Precipice sectors. It settles in the lungs of infected humaniti, and attaches to the lung alveoli. It spreads via airborne transmission. It has a long life span outside of a host - up to 2 weeks. The actual virus particles are large (for a virus) and do not stay for long in the air. It irreparably destroys the lung alveoli of the host, resulting in loss of lung capacity almost immediately on infection.

SPBC has a long incubation period - it can be several weeks from contracting the virus before any symptoms are displayed. Shortness of breath, lethargy and coughing are the primary symptoms. If untreated, the virus has a 50% mortality rate, however this does take from 4 to 12 months from first contracting the virus.

Referees : On initial exposure to SPBC, so on initial landing on a world affected by SPBC, and at the end of every continuous week they stay on that world, any unvaccinated character who is not continuously wearing a filter mask or better should make a Simple (2+) Endurance check. Note that a natural 2 is a failure. A failure means that the character is infected with SPBC. At the end of every week when infected by SPBC, a character should make an Average (8+) Endurance check. On a failure, the character reduces 1 point from either Strength, Dexterity or Endurance (players choice). This is cumulative. If a stat is reduced by 3 points total from SPBC, 1 point of damage becomes permanent.

History & Background / Dossier[edit]

SPBC, or Skania Pact Breathing Condition was first noted on the Listra (world) in the year 629.
Scout ships from Skanor (world), exploring the newly colonised subsector, landed on the world and as the inhabitants had long had natural immunity to the virus, did not realise that they had contracted the virus until symptoms appeared long after thay had left. Not realised how virulent it was, the virus soon spread throughout the Rigel subsector.

A vaccine is now readily and cheaply available on all planets in the Rigel and nearby subsectors.

There are various drugs that can cure SPBC, but there is usually permanent lung damage from any medium or long term infection.
