A personal servant to Sir George Chu, a servant from Lemish (world), the batman was usually seen as a desirable position. The soldier was exempted from more onerous duties and often got better rations and other favors from his officer. Senior officers' batmen usually received fast promotion to lance-corporal, with many becoming corporals and even sergeants. The position was generally phased out after the war. Officers of the Household Division however still have orderlies, because of the high proportion of ceremonial duties required of them.
Unfortunately, he is not much brighter than his charge, and often failed to curb his captain's more reckless endeavors. He is however, a crack shot with a 4mm Gauss Rifle, with the agility of an acrobat, and has saved his leader's life on several occasions. He also kept his uniforms pressed and prepared hot meals while out in the field. In "retirement", he still loyally serves his master, as a squire of sorts.
