The Fifth Frontier War (1107-1110) is latest in the series of continuing wars between the Zhodani Consulate and the Third Imperium occurring in the Spinward Marches. Following several years of unrest and provocation, Zhodani forces attacked across the Imperial borders while previously placed guerrillas on selected Imperial worlds began uprisings. Vargr and Sword World forces allied with the Zhodani also participated in the attacks. [1]

In the years before the war, there were ample symptoms of tension. Zhodani military preparations produced restrictions on ship movements in their territory. Reactions on both sides also increased tensions. Minor transgressions by either side produced out of proportion reactions by the other side. In space, ships were boarded, fired on, and seized. On worlds, local populations reacted with violence, burning out suspected enemy sympathizers, aliens, or pacifists. By mid-I 107, everyone expected war; it was just that no one knew exactly when it would come. [2]

The war began with a Zhodani declaration of war, delivered to the lmperial government at Regina and Jewell simultaneously on 187-1107. The Zhodani forces (7 fleets) attacked high population worlds in the Jewell and Regina subsectors. [2]

The Vargr side of the Fifth Frontier War began when forces of the Ekhlle Ksafi (40th Squadron) and a large number of mercenary and allied vessels provided by the Anti-Rukh Alliance and Society of Equals attacked from Gvurrdon Sector into Regina. The forces divided into two fleets: the Gireel Fleet attacked Dentus and Kinorb and soon had pushed as far as Beck’s World, while the Uthith Fleet took Heya and Yorbund. The fleets were followed by a number of corsair bands. [3]

The Sword Worlds Confederation created four fleets for action in the war: the Narsil Fleet, the Joyeuse Fleet, the Gram Fleet, and the Sacnoth Fleet. Each was named for the world primarily responsible for raising and supporting it. The Gram Fleet attacked at the rear of the 23rd Fleet and reached as far as Lanth and D'Ganzio. The Sacnoth Fleet patrolled the rimward border of the Sword Worlds. The presence of the Darrian Fleet along the Sword World border occupied the full attention of the Narsil Fleet, thus keeping it from engaging the Imperials. The Joyeuse Fleet patrolled Entrope, Winston, and Anselhome, all former Darrian territory taken by the Sword Worlds during the 1st Frontier War. The Joyeuse Fleet pushed out of Joyeuse toward Vilis, but was never able to make any progress against the Imperial Fleet. [4]

On 116-1110, representatives of the Imperium and the Zhodani Consulate met at Esalin to discuss a cease fire, imposed as soon as word could be disseminated to the fleets. It was agreed that there would be no territorial gains for any participants. The Armistice of 1110 called for a return to the status quo. [5]

Three changes as a consequence of the war happened. The establishment of the Border Worlds Confederation from ten worlds in the trailing Sword Worlds. Although a client-state of the Imperium, it remains independent and sovereign. In early 1110 the Darrian Fleet struck and reclaimed the worlds Entrope, Winston, and Anselhome, all former Darrian territory taken by the Sword Worlds during the 1st Frontier War. The Darrians refused to return the worlds. The Imperium pointed to its prior occupation of Quar in the Chronor subsector to refute charges of territorial gain as applied to that world. [5]
