Jastamin/Jerik (Halcyon 0727) (C676776-5) has several independent nations. This is an example of a local TL–5 Cavalry Brigade. The brigade has 422 vehicles, 170 officers, 2,150 enlisted, a total of 2,320 troopers. This includes the Brigade HQ, a Cavalry Regiment, a Motorized Infantry Battalion, an Assault Gun Battalion, an Artillery Battalion, and an Aviation Squadron.

Doctrine[edit]

This unit works best as a combined arms operation, in support and providing flank protection and reconnaissance for larger, static, foot mobile infantry units. The brigade is essentially a reinforced cavalry regiment built out with supporting arms. The units are mostly build from one basic model of fully tracked carrier which simplifies common parts and maintenance. All the vehicles are thin-skinned, unarmored and vulnerable to direct and indirect fire. Speed and mobility is prioritized over protection. Every support vehicle has a MMG, for infantry suppression. Dismounted machine guns are lacking however. The Javelin's auto-canon and the artillery weapons more than capable of defeating most enemy armor. Plans to introduce a more heavily armored tank or tank destroyer, with a high velocity direct fire gun, and sloped frontal armor, have been discussed. The concerns are that a well protected vehicle will be too heavy to swim. The higher maintenance requirements are offset by the lower ground pressure and better cross country mobility associated with most wheeled vehicles of this TL. Organic engineering capabilities are very limited. The infantry companies also lack the typical mortars. Small man portable mortars which could fit in the 1 ton cargo bays have been considered. The brigade lacks the overall troop strength to take and hold ground for protracted periods. The unit is entirely amphibious and motorized which is unusual for this tech level. That makes it logistically very thirsty for sustained operations. The vehicles are all sealed to permit amphibious operations but lack life support and/or over pressure for use versus chemical weapons.

Camps filled with canvas tents characterize their support deployment. They quickly build a crude runway to permit the air assets to join them at the front. Each battalion and regiment has its support elements built in with the headquarters units. All administration functions, planning and operations are centrally controlled by the Brigadier General's staff. Sub units do not have initiative to stray from operational plans, which can make the unit slow to respond or exploit opportunities. The brigade HQ has the best forward observers in the unit with the scout/sniper section. Taking prisoners is discouraged, as the tiny MP section has limited capacity. They focus on traffic control and HQ security. Improvised prison camps of timber, sand bags and barbed wire have been tried. They typically run a single 24 hour march with a basic load and then stop to resupply and reassess the tactical and strategic situation. The inclusion of the aviation assets, integrated at this level means dedicated close air support and air cover.

The airborne unit is elite, but lightly equipped. Once they land, they require immediate after action relief and resupply. They can seize targets but are not equipped with any form of organic support elements (all teeth/no tail). They lack heavy weapons.

The two artillery battalions can provide descent indirect fire support for the maneuver elements. The howitzers are more accurate but lack the range and mobility of the 10cm high velocity SPGs. The towed howitzers necessitate bridging operations and the pontoon bridge is limited in the width of river the unit can cross (30m). Taking and holding bridges in advance often falls to the airborne battalion.
