Proto-Sophonts or protosophonts are intelligent species that have begun down the path towards a technological existence.

• Some may have regressed to an atavistic TL-0 existence as well.
• They can use found tools, but have little to no ability to manufacture tools yet.
• Whatever they are and whatever knowledge they possess, their tool using abilities give them significant advantages over less sophisticated animal-like creatures.
• Many species take a comparatively very long time to transition from TL-0 to TL-1. This time period is alternatively called:
  • Proto-Sophontic Age
  • Proto-Sophontic Epoch
  • Proto-Sophontic Period
